Best Dog Beaches, Victoria, Australia
One of my childhood memories was visiting the historic town of Echuca on the banks of the Murray River in a paddlewheeler. I was finally able to go back in 2021 in the middle of lockdown, and yes, I brought my dog.
Most cruise lines in Echuca will allow well-behaved dogs to join you on board, as long as they are not in the floating restaurant. For example, Echuca paddlesteamers make an hour-long trip a day to the historic PS Pevensey and PS Alexander Arbuthnot, and pets are welcome. Just be sure to hold your baby while flying!
Victoria is blessed with many beautiful cities and historic towns, the best example of which is Bellworth, 3 hours north of Melbourne. Bechworth is home to one of the finest public buildings in all of Victoria, constructed of beautiful honey granite.
To really enjoy Beechworth with your dog, I recommend picking up a self-guided tour brochure from the Visitor Information Center for a small fee. Then, wander the streets of the city

When in Beechworth, be sure to follow the stunning scenic drive through Beechworth Heritage Park on the north side of town. You can drive it or you can walk all or part of it with your dog Make sure you keep them separate
Most ski resorts in Australia do not allow dogs, as they are located in national parks or other restricted areas But the Plains Diner at Mount Victoria is a special treat, meaning your dog can join an adventure in the snow during the winter months. The ski resort has gentle slopes for beginners, or those who enjoy tobogganing or fun.
Note that the city is surrounded by a national park and is not fenced, so most of the time you will need to keep your dog on a leash. There are certain drop off points as defined on the website Check out the Plains Diner website for links to family-friendly restaurants in the countryside
While Melbourne may have plenty of trams on city streets, you know the city of Bendigo has a well-spoken tram. This is a great option for exploring the historic city, especially since well-behaved dogs are allowed to join you on the tram.
A List Of Dog Friendly Wineries In Mornington Peninsula
With a guided tour that takes you along the way, choose between riding the city loop on the tram (which takes about 45 minutes) or hop on and off with an all-day ticket.
Along the way you’ll pass the Central Deborah Gold Mine (dogs are allowed on self-guided tours), the Law Courts and War Memorial, and Weruna Lake (a great place to walk your dog).
Bright is a popular destination for dog owners There are plenty of dog-friendly trails in this small town in the High Country But for something different, consider cycling with your dog
There are several cycle routes near Bright, the North Road from Murray which starts nearby And if you don’t have your own bike, there are many bike rental shops in the city At least one of them, Electric Scooters, also offers to pull a dog for a fee, though some stores may have them if you ask directly. Check for any excess weight
The Best Dog Friendly Hotels And B&bs In Victoria For 2023
A popular option for experienced riders is the flat cycle track at Wandiligong, which is brilliant and just 5.5km from the house to Nightingale Bros Apple Orchard. Afterwards, take a dip in the River Chuli or enjoy a local beer at Bright Brew
There are many places in Victoria where you can see koalas in the wild, but one of the best is Raymond Island in East Gippsland, just off the lake.
To get to Raymond Island, I recommend parking in Pennsville and taking the short ferry as a pedestrian for free. The koala trail starts right next to the harbor and is best done on foot, so you have a chance to see koalas
The main route is 1.2 km long, although there are longer detours To support local volunteers, consider purchasing an on-site brochure or donating to the website Make sure you keep your dog on a leash at all times, even if your dog is something like ours, they probably won’t show up on gum trees!
Pet Friendly Holidays In Victoria Guide
Dog sleds are not the only form of friendly and historic transport in Victoria, with many historic dog sleds available. Near Melbourne you can take a vintage train ride on the Victorian Goldfields Railway, which connects the gold mining towns of Castlemaine and Maldon.
When selecting your vehicle, be sure to select “Travel Class” (only service dogs are allowed in the first vehicle). Historic wooden carriages in Touring Class with family rooms with opening windows perfect for an authentic experience. Dogs travel free, but please ensure they are well-behaved, allowing dogs to enter with the Station Master’s permission.
Book a Wednesday train or a Sunday morning train to enjoy a full day The first includes 2 1/2 hours in the gold mining town of Maldon, while the last trip is a 90-minute stop (Sunday afternoon trips may only be a short stop.) For a friendly lunch option, visit the Maldon Hotel. And dine at an outdoor table in its beer garden or one of the cafes
Castlemaine is a 90-minute drive from Melbourne, or connect with the V/Line train for the full train experience (one small dog allowed, see here).

There is much to see in Valhalla, exploring the town on foot and reading some of the 30 signs that tell its story. Dogs are also welcome to join the Tramline Walkway to the Golden Long Tunnel
Best Dog Friendly Days Out Around Melbourne
If you’re thinking of driving the Great Ocean Road with your dog, I’ll warn you in advance that it’s not dog-friendly at all. Many popular spots on the trail, such as the 12-point viewing platform, are off-limits to dogs Additionally, many beaches prohibit dogs during the summer months
However, there are still many things you can do with your dog, and it can be a short walk or a long walk with your dog, especially if you are good at it. I recommend that you read my guide in advance to find out what is and isn’t dog friendly, and book your accommodation in advance. If possible visit in the spring months or other winter months of the year, when many beaches allow dogs and sand

Although there are examples of silo art around Victoria, the biggest trail to complete is the Silo Art Trail. The first line runs about 200km from Rupaniap to Pacheow Lock in western Victoria, but has new silos.
