A family vacation is not complete without your family members. I hate leaving my German Shepherd, Rozko, at home when I travel and have so much fun taking him with me. But there are several important aspects to consider when planning a holiday with your dog. Which hotels allow dogs? Are there dog friendly restaurants and bars nearby? Are there activities in the area that you and your dog can enjoy together?

Dog Friendly Days Out
Burlington, Vermont is one of the most dog-friendly places in New England. Boasting incredible outdoor adventures and a hip, laid-back atmosphere, Burlington is as much a playground for fish as it is for their friends. You will find many interesting things to do with your dog. Cycle the Burlington Greenway along the shores of Lake Champlain, then stop for a local brew at one of the city’s dog-friendly breweries. Burlington brewpubs that allow dogs on the patio include Foam Brewers and Zero Gravity Craft Brewery, while places like Switchback Brewing Co. also allow dogs indoors. Church Street Marketplace, one of New England’s most popular pedestrian (and pup-friendly) malls, offers dog-friendly restaurants and shops. If you’re pet-friendly, Made Inn Vermont, a charming bed and breakfast near town, offers a cozy home away from home for you and your dog.
When the dog days of summer come around, there’s no better place for your pooch than Cape Cod! With miles of prime boardwalks, incredible scenery, and plenty of outdoor activities, Cape Cod is the perfect summer destination for people and dogs alike. They especially like to visit Cape Cod National Seashore. These sunny sandy beaches and trails allow dogs on a leash even in high season. Then quench your thirst at Provincetown Brewing Company. They’re so dog-friendly (and socially conscious) that a dog leash in the beer garden says “Eat Me Racist.” There are also a number of pet-friendly places to stay on the Cape. Take care of your pooch at the upscale Chatham Berry Inn or try “roughing it” with your pooch at Nixon State Park Campground.
Cape Cod National Seashore is just one of the many reasons to visit Cape Cod with your dog.
For a beach vacation with your dog, visit Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Just five miles south of Portland, it’s the perfect getaway without going too far. The southern end of Fort Williams State Park, home to the famous Portland Lighthouse, has a large grassy area where dogs can run and play. Of course, you can’t visit Maine without trying the local lobster rolls, and Bite in Maine has an outdoor food truck in the park with pet-friendly picnic tables. Higgins Beach is a popular spot for dogs to frolic in the sand and splash in the water. After a long day of fun in the sun, relax at Inn by the Sea, a luxury beachfront resort that offers the ultimate in pampering for pets and their owners.
Best Dog Friendly Winter Vacations
You and your dog will love exploring Nantucket together. This tiny island off the coast of Cape Cod has fewer traffic lights and more New England charm. From the ferry ride where you see many other pet owners, it’s clear that Nantucket is a place that welcomes fish lovers. Choose from a wide variety of dog-friendly activities, from leading the Sconset Bluff Walk to exploring historic lighthouses. The city has several dog-friendly patios, including the Black-Eyed Susan Breakfast Bar and the Euclidean American Bistro Queequeg. Get comfortable and stay a while at the Brass Lantern Inn’s cozy bed and breakfast, which welcomes four-legged friends in select rooms for a nominal fee.
This truly dog-friendly town in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom is a must-see. Known as the Ski Capital of the East, Stow attracts visitors from far and wide to its premier resort every winter. But with plenty of outdoor activities in every season, Stowe is a great place to vacation with your dog.
For the big adventurer, Smuggler’s Notch State Park offers miles of trails through the lush green mountains. For something more low-key (but just as fun), you’ll take your lovely dog for a walk along Stu’s Fun Trail. This 17-mile paved trail is lined with dog-friendly restaurants and wineries along the way. There are also a number of dog-friendly places to stay in the area for all budgets. Luxury resorts like Trapp Family Lodge, Tapnoch Resort, and The Lodge at Spruce Peak provide pet-friendly accommodations. However, if you’re looking for something more affordable, consider staying with your dog in a lodge or field guide lodge.
