Best Dog Friendly Vacation Spots In New England – This road trip is called “Lincoln’s List” because this route was created with our best furry friend in mind.
Our youngest, Lincoln, has been traveling with us since 2019 and is a big part of the reason we fell in love with road trips. Simply put, jumping in the car is the most accessible way for us to travel with it (and we take Lincoln almost everywhere we go).

Lincoln takes you to New England on this trip because the summer and fall temperatures are great, outdoor activities abound, and you’ll find one of the most dog-friendly national parks in the United States.

During the summer, you can take advantage of longer daylight hours and cooler temperatures than you find in many other countries this time of year. Or a trip in the fall to take advantage of the amazing fall foliage in one of the best places in the world for leaf viewing.
We spent 5 months in Ontario and New England during our 2022 travel season spent two weeks in VT in July, a long camping trip on the Schoodic Peninsula in Acadia National Park in early August, three weeks near Lake Placid, NY from Central to. coordinator. End of August, a month in Kempton, NY in September, three weeks in Ellsworth, ME in early October, and three weeks in Attleboro, MA in late October. (We also spent three weeks in Ontario at the beginning of our trip.)
There really wasn’t a bad time to be in New England during these months. Sure, the summer months can be hot at night, but make sure your apartment rental is air-conditioned and you’ll be fine. (To be fair, we say this as people who live differently in Texas, so our heat tolerance is probably higher than those who live up north year-round. However, we don’t do anything without air conditioning, so our tolerance is probably lower, ha!)

However, let’s say if you want to plan your trip for beautiful fall foliage, aim to travel in the second week of October. Although the places called Foliage will be busy (ie Kancamagus Highway and Stow, VT), the view is worth it!
RTL Tip: Want more time to hike or be on the water during your road trip? Visit in July or August. Do you feel like pleasant autumn foliage walks with hot cider in hand? Visit in October. Want cooler temperatures but fewer crowds? Visit in September.
Lincoln is definitely a fan of trips we can go on because it means it’s a lot easier for her to be with us. If you are close enough to any point on this trip to drive, this is what we recommend. Drive to the nearest point along this route and complete a loop to return home.
But if you can’t get here by car and you have a dog that does well on a plane, you can fly into Boston International Airport and rent a car when you land. If you are flying, we recommend rearranging this route a bit and going from Boston > Lake Placid > Stowe > Lincoln, NH > Acadia National Park > Portland > Boston.

We recommend treating this route like a traditional road trip, staying at a different location at each stop on your journey. You can search for campsites near any destination or stay in nearby towns.

Mirror lake The Mirror Lake Inn offers dog-friendly rooms and a restaurant with a dog-friendly patio. Can’t find anything in Lake Placid? Try nearby Wilmington.)
For Stowe, think Smuggler’s Notch Park or the town of Stowe. (You can also look about 40 minutes away in Burlington. Downtown Burlington is super dog friendly!)
For Acadia National Park, think Blackwood Park or the town of Bar Harbor. (Can’t find anything there? Try Ellsworth, ME. If you end up in Ellsworth, check out the Blue Hill Mountain Hike at Sunset. It’s gorgeous, dog-friendly, and the views rival Acadia with 1/100 the crowd!
Lincoln (the city, not to be confused with our dog of the same name) is nestled in the middle of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. That’s what makes it a great place to start a dog-friendly road trip.
Boston’s Dog Friendly Guide
You could easily spend a week exploring this area of ​​New Hampshire on your own because there are tons of great dog-friendly hikes and things to do nearby! (We spent a month here and couldn’t do and see everything on our list!)
But since we’re only planning one day to enjoy the White Mountains on this trip, here are our top recommendations for the best things to do.
This is a bonus because you can drive the Kankamagus Road on your way from Portland to Lincoln. (So ​​every time you take this drive along your trip, come back to this section. If you’re not driving a full loop along this route, consider taking about two hours to drive back and forth along the Kankamagus Highway during your trip to stay in Lincoln.)

Top Dog Friendly Vacations In Texas (vacation Inspiration!)
The Kankamagus Highway is a 34 mile drive between Lincoln, NH and Conway, NH. This is one of the most popular drives in New Hampshire and one of the best places in the United States to see fall foliage. While there are many views and trails along this scenic drive that can keep you busy for your entire trip, we recommend stopping at only a few of the views and none of the hikes along this drive. (We have a better one next time!) Note: Visiting in the fall? wake up early This ride gets crowded quickly, so go the night before or call early to avoid long lines and lots of traffic on the way to your next destination. Cancamagus Road is great, but ideally not your only activity for the day!
Good luck getting your pup out of the car and into the woods! Hiking was our busiest activity during the month in New Hampshire. We were out exploring every weekend and many weeknights. Spending time outside hitting the trail is one of the best things to do in New Hampshire.
You can see all of your favorite New Hampshire hikes here, but if you want our top recommendation, we recommend going to Walsh-Dickie Mountain. This approximately 4.4 mile loop is an amazing half day hike with mountain views. It’s dog friendly, good exercise and lots of fun if you have varied terrain between exposed rock faces and wooded trails.
If you search for this hike through All Trails, find the Walsh-Dickey Loop Trail (not “Welch Mountain Sill” or “Walsh and Dickey Mountains”). If you’re following the entire loop path, you want to make sure you see the cliff face
Bar Harbor Pet Friendly Vacation Rentals
Both Walsh and Mount Dickey. We recommend walking in the opposite direction so that you climb up the hill in the steepest parts. (Especially if it’s wet, or if you visit in the fall foliage season when the leaves are on the ground, this is helpful. Take your time, the ground can be slippery.)
Dog friendly? Definitely. Everything on this itinerary was approved by Lincoln (the dog). Note that there are steep sections of this walk on exposed rocks.
