Not what you expected? Perhaps unsurprisingly, there is a lot of overlap between people involved in craft beverages. When you’re looking for a place to grab a few craft beers with a dog, Wappingers Falls has plenty to choose from, including Obercreek Brewing Company. There you will find good tunes, tasty beer and a relaxed atmosphere. Other breweries that welcome well-behaved dogs into their outdoor spaces include Bee Farm Brewery in Poughkeepsie and Black Snake Brewing Company in Staatsburg.

But if you’re not a big fan of hopsine, don’t worry, there are other dog-friendly craft beers out there. Dutch Spirits in Pine Plains allows broodstock at its Prohibition-era estate. Likewise, Denning’s Point Distillery in Beacon and Taconic Distillery in Stanfordville are pet-friendly. Plus, the pups can hang out at the Treasury Cider Bar at Fishkill Farm in Hopewell Junction. Shadmoor State Park in Montauk, New York is the perfect getaway for you and your furry friend. About a three-hour drive from New York City, this state park has beach access, hiking trails, and observation decks. Dogs must be supervised at all times, but can play on the beach and swim in the ocean in a shallow depth of no more than six feet. Grab your blanket and picnic basket and spend the day on the sand, bird watching or enjoying the beautiful scenery.

An easy drive from New York, Rockaway Beach has the town’s only legal surfing beach, a boardwalk, and plenty of restaurants. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, dogs are not allowed on the sand or boardwalk, but visit in the off-season when there are fewer people and a little cooler. After a long day of letting your kid explore the ocean and play in the sand, head to the dog-friendly Rockaway Beach Surf Club for tacos and drinks. Rockaway Beach is easily accessible year-round by car, subway, and ferry.

Looking for a place where your four-legged friend can roam free and experience Mother Nature? Look at Prospect Park in Brooklyn. The park offers special closing times for dogs from 6:00am to 9:00pm and 9:00pm. At 1 a.m., there’s plenty of room to play on the lawn. The park features a dog beach where dogs can cool off in the water, dig in the sand and make new friends. Located just north of Long Meadow Ballfield, Dog Beach is accessible by subway and car.

Time to take a road trip. Get in the car and drive two hours to Gardiner County Park on Long Island’s Bay Shore. This public park offers trails through wetlands and forests and is a great place to explore nature with your pet in a secluded area. Dogs must be on a leash, but Great South Bay has plenty of trails to explore, a dog fountain and a small beach.

Ready to hit the beach? Fisherman’s Cove Conservation Area in Manasquan, New Jersey is a great place to spend some time with Fido. The eastern part of the area is considered a dog beach and allows your four-legged friend to swim in the water and relax on the sand. Dogs should take the initiative to protect their beach habitat, but this shouldn’t stop them from enjoying the sun. About an hour and a half from New York City, Fisherman’s Cove Conservation Area is close to many restaurants, bars and other beaches.

Admire the famous hurricane and eat a hot dog at Nathan’s Famous while strolling along Coney Island Beach. Since dogs are not allowed on the beach in summer, you need to get there between October and May to enjoy the three kilometers of sand. Not all dogs can swim in the water, but they can walk the boardwalk year-round. To experience all that Coney Island has to offer, you can take the subway from New York City and travel an hour and a half.
