Best Dog Friendly Beaches Kent – Living in London, we’re lucky enough to easily escape the capital for the day and be at the beach within one to two hours, with plenty of dog-friendly beaches. Last summer we had a great time exploring West Sussex’s best dog-friendly beaches, but today we’re sharing three dog-friendly sandy beaches in North East Kent between Margate and Broadstairs on the blog that you can visit with your pooch. -approx, so don’t worry about the May-September dog beach ban.
The nice thing is that the beaches we are talking about are not far from each other, so if you are traveling by car, you can have fun between them during the day. Nearby are the coastal towns of Margate and Broadstairs, both of which have plenty for dogs to explore – more on that later.
Best Dog Friendly Beaches Kent
All the beaches we visited are sandy, so they are best enjoyed when the tide is out. To get the most out of your visit, check tide times at Tideschart.com.

Palm Bay Beach would be Margate’s closest year-round dog-friendly beach if you wanted to combine the two. When we first arrived in Palm Bay, it wasn’t immediately obvious how to get to the beach from the boardwalk, but once you find your way through the rocks, the beach is yours. There is plenty of sand on the beach for sniffing or when we saw excited greyhounds zooming up and down.
There is free street parking and a dog-friendly Jet Ski Cafe at the far end of the beach.
About a ten minute drive along the coast between Margate and Broadstairs you will find Kingsgate Bay, famous for its white chalk cliffs, sea caves and the much-photographed Kingsgate Bay Sea Arch. The tide was still quite high when I went to the village, so I couldn’t go around the arch, but the beach was still nice to visit.
Unfortunately there is no parking at Kingsgate Bay and access to the beach is more of a hit and miss. The only direct car park is at the Captain Digby pub (dogs are only allowed in the beer garden). It will probably set you back £20 if you don’t eat there directly either.

You can drive past the popular Joss Bay Surf Beach which has a large car park and then walk to Kingsgate Bay approx. 15 minutes. Please note that dogs are only allowed on Joss Bay Beach before 10am and after 6pm from 1 May to 30 September.
Another dog-friendly stop is Botany Bay Hotel, a 10-minute walk from Kingsgate Beach. Dogs are welcome in the bar area and there are also some dog-friendly hotel rooms if you plan to stay overnight.
Last but certainly not least was Dumpton Gap, the closest beach to Broadstairs on our list – in fact you could walk from Dumpton Gap to Broadstairs in 15 minutes if you wanted to. Dumpton Gap was definitely our surprise favorite of the afternoon. Be sure to visit when the tide is out and you can walk along the beach with the backdrop of sand, sea and steep white cliffs which is quite stunning.
Parking was convenient as there was plenty of street parking at the beach entrance. Although not open when we visited, Sam’s Café, located at the entrance to the beach and overlooking the sand, has a great reputation for welcoming people and babies.
Pet Friendly Kent
When we visited recently, there wasn’t much open in Margate and Broadstairs due to the lockdown, so a dog-friendly city guide will be an issue going forward. However, here are two canine must-dos we just have to mention if you’re in the area…
Margate Old Town is home to one of our favorite baby accessories brands Hiro + Wolf and their sister brand Artisans & Adventures. Known for her colorful, ethical dog pieces and fantastic hands-free cords, Margita’s visit with her four-legged friend wouldn’t be complete without a look at Hiro + Wolf. The brand names Hiro and Wolfie give you a warm welcome, and with Wolfie, you’ll make a friend for life by bringing him treats.
A visit to the coast wouldn’t be the same without ice cream, would it? Luckily Morelli’s Gelato on Broadstairs seafront has both a human version and a baby version, and the latter is delicious judging by how quickly it was gobbled down. Morelli Gelato is also usually dog-friendly inside, but during the Covid-19 restrictions, you can get your Morelli fix (along with other dogs and people).
Dog friendly beaches and dog ice cream were ticked off the list so we ended the day very happy we had decided to check out this little corner of the Kent coast. As a South Londoner, although these dog friendly beaches in Kent may not be as close to us as the dog friendly beaches in West Sussex, they are definitely worth a visit.
Dog Friendly Lake Michigan Beaches
Palm Bay, Kingsgate Bay and Dumpton Gap are certainly not the only dog-friendly beaches in the area, but they are probably the most famous. If you’re looking to explore more dog-friendly beaches nearby, here are some helpful resources to help you plan your trip:
By car: If you want to go to the beach, a car is a definite plus and definitely a must for those with older dogs like Belinha. With the exception of Kingsgate Bay where parking was difficult, you can park freely almost anywhere on the coast away from the main town centres. Metered parking was easy to find in Broadstairs which is also close to Morell.
By public transport: The South East Express service from St Pancras takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to Margate or 1 hour 40 minutes to Broadstairs. There is also a stopover from Victoria (an easier option for South Londoners), approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to Margate or 1 hour 50 minutes to Broadstairs.
Local transport: If you want to explore but need a break from walking, there are regular local buses that follow the coastal path.

Dog Friendly Beaches In The South
Sandy beach lovers may not be impressed by the pebbly coastline in this part of Kent, but what Whitstable Beach lacks in gold it makes up for in atmosphere, scenery and fun. Some people compare what Whitstable has to Brighton Beach, but it is much smaller and Whitstable Beach has a more traditional feel with its beach huts, surfboard shacks and fishing boats moored on the beach.
The kilometre-long west beach is a broken strip of flagstones that offers unrestricted access for dogs in Kent, where rules restricting dogs are common. The old Neptun pub, known locally as ‘Neppy’, is rather unusually situated right on the beach, so when the weather is good you can enjoy a large beer garden, but if it’s cold there’s a fire inside to keep you warm. You and your dog. The town of Whitstable offers antique shops and independent retro shops with great fish and chips, locally brewed beer and delicious oysters to enjoy while taking in the photogenic harbor views. No trip to the South East is complete without a visit to the city and its unique and wonderful dog-friendly beaches in Kent.
