First, some background on how we became new foster parents. Two years ago, when the coronavirus suddenly invaded our lives and the first lockdown began, my husband and I joined a pet-lovers community to help feed stray dogs on the streets. And then we found a group of very cute puppies in the park without their mothers. They were only a few weeks old and we fed them. One of them was a strong, playful puppy and one of our friends immediately named him King because it is every dog’s favorite name.
The king grew cheekier and fatter by the day and quickly became a happy yet strong alpha. Unfortunately, tragedy struck and he was beaten by some hooligans in the middle of the night when he was just six months old and his spine was broken. Raju, a super-energetic boy, was nearly paralyzed and in excruciating pain — several vets said he should be put down. We finally agreed to surgery on one of them and brought him home with the hope that one day he will be able to walk and run like a normal dog. But two years later, although he could stand and walk a little, he was still semi-paralyzed and incontinent, but ran with the wheeled stroller we brought him. Raju is quite the traveler as he has been to the beaches and forests and now he is having a wonderful vacation in the hills. His younger sister, Aishu, has always been with him through thick and thin and has started staying with us in the past few months, and this is her first trip away from home.
The Eureka Korg walks the talk when it comes to pet friendliness. This pet-friendly resort in Coorg has so far hosted more than 95 dogs and cats, including 30 Indians. Most pet-friendly resorts discriminate against India and favor gentle, cuddly breeds. They also have many limitations.  King is a paralyzed dog who also has special needs. Although we have taken him to boutique hotels in Ooty, Bangalore and other pet-friendly resorts near Bangalore, we were a bit worried whether he would feel comfortable here. But Eureka Korg made sure he was at home from the start. “Pets is the motto of our guests and they wear their pet collars as you can see on the board at the entrance,” said General Manager Sanjay Pandita who welcomed us. As we were sipping welcome drinks, Raju and Aishu greeted us. We also register them as pets when booking with specific details.

The staff treated the pets very lovingly, Raju and Aishu felt very comfortable there. They walked and ran with us, rolled in the grass, sunbathed, chased squirrels and ducks, looked out over the big green space from the balconies, lay down and fell asleep dreaming of more adventures.
