However, when it comes to dog friendliness, Melbourne, Victoria leads the way and is the most dog friendly city in Australia.
Melbourne is a great place to visit with your dog for a short trip or as part of a longer trip around Australia. Read on for everything you need to know about visiting Melbourne with your dog.

Best Dog Beaches Melbourne 2024
While many of Melbourne’s popular attractions are off-limits if you’re walking with a pup, there are plenty of dog-friendly things to do in Melbourne. Here are my top five recommendations.
Having failed to visit these famous colorful bath boxes on previous trips to Melbourne, I decided to visit them on a recent visit with my dog. Luckily, it’s dog friendly, so the best place to Instagram is with your dog!
Dogs are here every day from April to October, then from November to March before 10am or after 7.30pm (no dogs between 10am and 7.30pm from November to March, click here for full details).
Either way, it’s best to get here early to avoid the crowds and get the best photos with your dog. It’s easy to get to the city by car, remember to pay for parking.

If you’re looking for a day-long beach nearby, Brighton Dog Beach on Sandown Street isn’t far to the north.
Most botanic gardens around Australia, and the rest of the world, do not allow dogs on their grounds. However, the Royal Botanic Gardens of Melbourne, Victoria, are more welcoming.
Inside the parks, dogs are still not allowed outside the park, but they are allowed to join you for a walk in the park. Also, if you decide to jump in the lake, well-behaved dogs can join you for free.
A trip to Melbourne wouldn’t be complete without exploring the city’s famous but changing street art. Many suburbs have great examples, but the most popular destination is the city’s Hoosier Lane, not far from Federation Square.

Be sure to stop by Hoosier Lane, where you’ll find new creations sprayed on the walls. But I recommend going a few blocks east to the less busy ACDC Lane and Duckboard Place, as it’s too busy for some dogs to appreciate.
Melbourne is home to one of Australia’s most unexpected World Heritage sites: the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton Park on the northern edge of the city. The building is one of the few surviving examples of exhibition buildings built around the world in the late 19th century.
Although dogs are not allowed in (we weren’t due to university exams at the time of our visit), it’s still a great place to visit and get outdoors (keep your dog on a lead). The lawns at Carlton Gardens are also perfect for a picnic.
It’s a short tram or car ride from central Melbourne to St Kilda Bay. A popular beach destination close to the city with many leisure opportunities.
Dog’s Day Out: The 8 Best Places To Take Your Pooch In Melbourne
Your dog is not allowed in Luna Park (no barking allowed), instead, take a walk along the pier (dogs allowed on a lead) or visit one of the nearby beaches.
St Kilda Beach, east of the harbor only allows dogs in winter, instead go west near Pier Road where dogs are allowed all year round. See below for more information on nearby beaches.
If you visit on a Sunday, check out the market on the Esplanade. Alternatively, you can have a cuppa and cake at one of the cafes on Acland Street.

Dog Friendly Victoria: Holidaying In Victoria With A Dog
While Melbourne doesn’t have as many surfing beaches as my hometown of Sydney (for the closest beaches to Melbourne, head to Torquay at the start of the Great Ocean Road), there are still some nice beaches along the harbour. Phillip Bay is great to visit because of the calm waters.
It is up to individual councils to decide whether or not dogs are allowed on beaches. There are usually clear signs, but sometimes you may need to look online at council websites.
For the most part, dogs are allowed on the beaches in winter, but in summer they are restricted to early and late evenings. However, there are some beaches that are dog free all year round.
For example, if you are going to St Kilda, dogs are only allowed on the main part of St Kilda Beach in winter, but not on the sand from November to March.

Instead, in summer, head south-east (towards Brooks Wharf and the north end of the St Kilda Marina car park) or north-west (the north-west end of the section between St Kilda Pier and the drainage channel) and to the west. West St Kilda.
Many of Melbourne’s parks are dog friendly, although they must remain in the park. As I mentioned earlier, dogs are welcome in the Royal Botanic Gardens and Carlton Gardens. Another downtown strip option is Flagstaff Gardens.
If you prefer to keep your dog off-leash, your options are more limited, although some new dog parks have recently been proposed (and in some cases have opened). See the council’s website for a full list and maps.
Near Southbank, a few blocks south of Crown Melbourne, Kingsway Fenced Dog Park is a fenced dog park with a gravel surface.
Best Day Trips From Melbourne
On the north side of the city, visit Clayton Reserve on the western edge of North Melbourne. This walled lawn park is a favorite of urban dog owners and even has lights.
Two other seamless options close to the city are the Goshin’s Paddock sections at Yarra Park, just north of Yarra from the Royal Botanic Gardens and east of the famous MCG Stadium.
For a great out-of-town option (car required), visit Aranga Nature Reserve, just off the M3 in Donvale. There is also a dog agility course along with the large meadow.
Like most places in Australia, most shops in Melbourne will not be happy if you try to bring your dog in. However, the rules are being relaxed in South Yarra’s Chapel Street and Prahran, which recently became Melbourne’s first dog-friendly shopping centre.
Dog Friendly Melbourne: Visiting Melbourne With A Dog
As you walk down the street, look out for “paw on the door” stickers that indicate pet-friendly businesses. Many fashion stores are pet-friendly (we popped in to check out Pajama Alexander’s latest pajama designs); Even some local banks allow pets.

One of the things that makes Melbourne really dog ​​friendly is their public transport and attitude towards pets. Unlike most Australian cities where pets are prohibited on public transport, pets are allowed on public transport in Melbourne with some caveats.
With these generous rules, it means you can quickly escape on public transport to the Melbourne CBD with your pet from the metropolitan area (for dogs of all sizes) or across the state (for animals smaller pet). Traveling around the city with small pets is also easy.

The best option is metro trains. Cats and dogs of all sizes are allowed on Metro trains. Cats and puppies must travel in a container, and large dogs are allowed on a lead and muzzle.
Only small pets are allowed in containers on local V/Line trains. Maximum container size 56 cm long x 30 cm wide x 38 cm high, maximum weight 15 kg. It should be stored in a designated storage area and it is recommended to travel outside peak hours; See here for more information.
