For many, a trip to Illinois means a visit to Chicago, with its world-class museums, stunning architecture and fine dining. Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, the city boasts miles of ocean-like shoreline and lush parks steps from downtown. But what surprises most visitors is how much more Illinois has to offer! You’ll find the real America outside the city limits. The Mississippi River defines the entire western border of the state and offers many outdoor activities. Beautiful river towns, steamboats, sprawling vineyards and cozy inns are just some of the discoveries that await you and your pet in Illinois.

If possible, plan a visit to Illinois for your pets in the fall. In September and October, daytime temperatures are perfect in the 70s, the sky is reliably blue, and the leaves of the fall trees show their wonderful colors. You won’t have to worry about snow until the end of November, and hotel prices are generally lower in the fall, winter, and spring. Summers in Illinois can be hot and dark, but that’s when most of the state’s festivals and fairs are held and when most people visit the state.

Explore Chicago’s pet-friendly Lakefront Trail, which stretches 18 miles along Lake Michigan and connects neighborhoods, parks and attractions like Navy Pier, Buckingham Fountain and Soldier Field.

Let’s go on Route 66! The trailhead sign is located at Michigan Avenue and East Adams Street in Chicago.
