We traveled through the Hunter Valley on our dog-friendly road trip to Port Stephens and were able to visit three wineries within a few minutes’ drive of each other.

Situated on 40 acres, the award-winning winery specializes in four varieties of wine, Semillon, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. The views from here are spectacular over the Brockenbeck mountain range with rose gardens, a duck pond and of course, vineyards.
We didn’t have time to eat here but if you feel adventurous you can try one of the cheese plates on the veranda or BYO picnic and enjoy it by a fire pit with a bottle of Hanging Tree wine. around the And if you like your wine on the funnier side, you can try your hand at one of the outdoor games, including giant chess. Teddy is really in charge!
Fun Things To Do In Hunter Valley, Australia
If you’re lucky you’ll find vodka and Muscat’s resident wine dogs. Meeting Vodka was the highlight of our visit, he and the wine were definitely the stars of the show.
The wine here is top notch, there’s a $5 tasting fee if you don’t buy in. Although the wine here is so good, it’s almost impossible to leave empty-handed. We have nothing!
This family winery is not only famous for its wine, but also for its dog, the St. Bernard, Archie. I had the pleasure of meeting Archie on my last visit in 2011 and have so many fond memories of Sobles that I can’t wait to return. When this picture was taken I thought I didn’t have cancer, I didn’t know I had thyroid cancer: the second coming.
When we arrived, I was sad to find out that Archie had crossed the Rainbow Bridge at Christmas 2018, but we were still warmly welcomed by the winemakers Jason and Robin. Teddy was treated like a VIP, got pets and hugs and was totally on edge.

Sobles is one of the few wineries in the Hunter that makes and ages every wine under its own label from grapes they grow or buy in the Hunter Valley and is one of only 8 wineries with its own bottling line.
The cellar door has a unique design and a cozy and friendly atmosphere inside. There are free BBQ and picnic facilities outside and when Jason is around, he’s more than happy to talk about wine and how it’s made. The wines here are very reasonably priced and the tasting is free if you swing by the cellar door. Otherwise it’s $5 per person for pre-booked group tastings.
Although there is no view from the cellar door, the Pepper Tree cellar door is located in a very beautiful location, surrounded by green grass and beautiful gardens. This has to be one of the most exciting events in the Hunter Valley.
Not only do they allow dogs here, they love dogs here and have their own alcoholic dog, Spencer the Schnauzer. Teddy loves her even though she doesn’t deserve his love.

Since Peppertree’s Hunter Valley Estate was established in 1991, they have added vineyards in Orange, Wrattonbully and Coonawarra and this is reflected in the wine list. The welcome was warm and the wine was good, suffice it to say we didn’t leave empty handed.
