Best Dog Friendly Vacations West Coast

Best Dog Friendly Vacations West Coast – In this post, I wanted to take a look at dog-friendly places in the West ~ focusing on California and Oregon, two states where you can easily travel with your pet (I know because I’m here every time I travel)!  In these states, I wanted to find dog-friendly places: spacious dog parks or dog-friendly beaches, great pet-friendly hotels, and a laid-back city vibe that makes it easy for some bring yourself. Pets together for events.  I found great places like Bend, Oregon and Carmel in California.  “The West Coast’s Favorite Dog Destinations!” Join me and my dog Dylan as we search for the title.

Although Cannon Beach is my only dog-friendly beach in Oregon, take note: almost every beach in Oregon is dog-friendly, with fewer rules and restrictions than California beaches! Translation: The Oregon Coast is ideal for traveling with a dog. Photo of Gold Beach, Oregon.

I love Cannon Beach for so many reasons: charming town, dozens of great restaurants, COFFEE (Sleepy Monk!!), many first class hotels, pet friendly, and of course: 100 beaches % pet friendly. Friendly  No belt needed here!!  Oregon is more liberal than California in this regard.  The view of Haystack Rock will amaze you especially at sunset.  Walk your pig on Ocean Avenue, enjoy a bowl of chowder on an outdoor patio, and be sure to visit the amazing pet store around the corner: Puppy Love by the Sea.

*** My picks for the best pet friendly hotels in Cannon Beach: Here’s a link: Ocean Lodge and Surfsand Resort.  Each has ocean beaches, upscale hotels, and is very pet friendly.  Ocean Lodge rooms are bigger and take better advantage of the view ~ but Surfsand is closer to town and Haystack Rock, the rooms are more comfortable, and the Wayfarer restaurant is my favorite in town (and offers room service)…

My current residence in the States is Bend, and I honestly don’t think I’ve ever lived in a more pet-friendly place.  Bend’s staggering number of dog parks alone puts California’s dog parks to shame, and nearly every restaurant in town has a dog-friendly patio, including: McMenamin School in St. Francis (which is a pub, brewery, cinema, and concert venue). , cigar bars and hotels all converted into one old Catholic school), Bear Winery, Avid Cider, Crux Brewing, 10 Barrel….and the list goes on…

Bend has more parks, hotels and restaurants per capita than any other city on this list! Dylan is pictured on the Deschutes River Trail in Bend.

*** My pick for the best pet-friendly hotel(s) in Bend: Tetaro Golf Resort.  At Tetherow, you have an upscale hotel in a golf resort with stunning mountain views and you are only 5 minutes from the winding town and Old Mill.  This is the best pet friendly place to stay in town.  Or, head to Sunriver Resort, about 20 minutes south of Bend: one of the best family resorts in the United States.

Carmel Main Beach is my favorite dog-friendly beach in the world: popular Pebble Beach is on the right, and if you follow the crescent-shaped beach on the left, you’ll find cypress trees that shape your look. All kinds of multi-million dollar homes…from cute cottage style to quaint and modern.  Clint Eastwood has a reason to live here: Carmel has one thing.

This city loves dogs: they are welcome almost everywhere ~ but I especially love the cozy outdoor patio at Forest Forge, especially with the dog-friendly menu…

Carmel is not the only place on Monterey Bay with amazing ocean views: head to Pacific Ocean Park and walk along the river for a view…

*** My top hotel for dogs in Carmel: The Lodge at Pebble Beach.  Yes, it’s expensive~ but according to my parents and a handy tip: every room here is pet friendly!  And you can bring any size dog.  For a more affordable option in Carmel, try Doris Day’s pup-friendly Cypress Inn.

The Best Dog Friendly Beaches In West Sussex To Visit With Your Dog

I grew up in Orange County and ran into some of my friends from Huntington Beach last week at the new Pacific Outdoor Mall.  Dylan was with me on the way home for Christmas ~ and that meant I had to take him shopping with me.  The luxury boutique invited us in, she had coffee with us, and we all had lunch on Sims’ patio overlooking the pier and ocean.  I would go back in a heartbeat!  Here’s another reason to visit Huntington with your dog: It’s the only beach in Orange County.

*** Dog Friendly Hotel in Huntington Beach: Kimpton Shorebreak Huntington Beach.  Kimptons are super luxurious and always dog friendly… they even offer a dog happy hour!  With ocean views in a pale blue palette, it’s especially romantic and you’re just a block from the pier, Main Street and the ocean.  Located just a few miles north of Huntington Beach.

San Diego has not one, but two dog-friendly beaches, both in tony areas: Del Mar and Coronado.  Dylan and I tried the dog beach in Del Mar, just south of Encinitas, last year.  Although it is not as big as Carmel Beach: it is still amazing.  There were happy dogs walking in and out of the water, the people were relaxed and friendly, and the lot was on the same street as the beach entrance making it easy to park.  Coronado’s dog-friendly beach has white sand and is steps away from the historic and pet-friendly Hotel Del Coronado.

Coronado’s Dog Beach is one of the best places to play with your pup on the sand in Southern California.

*** My Favorite Dog Friendly Hotels in San Diego: San Diego is pretty big, so it depends on where you want to stay.  For upstate, try the upscale L’Auberge Del Mar, which accepts two dogs of any size.  If you’re in the middle of the Gaslamp, try the trendy Hotel Indigo with its in-house bar.  If you want to be close to Coronado’s popular dog beach, check out the Hotel del Coronado ~ there are three pet-friendly restaurants!  (Dogs up to 40 lbs in Dell only…)

That concludes my picks for the best dog-friendly places on the West Coast!  What I’d like to add: More travel articles I’ve been reading lately or A.I. Appears to be written by or with editors not in the places they suggest.  Rest assured: every place on this list is one I’ve visited in the past year, so my recommendations are timely and relevant in 2020 and beyond!

Dog Friendly Campsites On California Beaches

If you’re a pet parent who swears by “dog walks” like me, you should have at least one dog-friendly trip in Northern California on your bucket list. While traveling Northern California with Babu (our Tibetan spaniel mix) for over 10 years (we live in San Francisco), we took dog friendly trips from San Francisco, and two of which are still our favorites to this day. Dog-friendly tours in Northern California are a clear winner thanks to the many attractions and restaurants on tour that welcome your best friend.

Exploring California’s Coastal Redwoods in the north and the famous 17-mile loop in the south (between Carmel and Monterey) are two of the best ways to travel the West Coast with your dog, especially in the winter. Here are dog-friendly attractions, stops, and things to do for a dog-friendly trip to Northern California’s Pacific Coast.

P.S. I have done my best to provide up-to-date information on dog-friendly accommodations, but pet policies change frequently. So, please call and confirm before booking any place.
