The modern restaurant and bar has open fires and you can enjoy your meals (made mostly from Delson products) and afternoon tea in a warm and cozy atmosphere. Dogs are allowed in the restaurant and accommodation in the 21 rooms (sleeps 3) is free.
This magnificent mound looks like a fort with corner towers, gates and a grand entrance gate. Inside is an old-fashioned English mansion, with acres of polished hardwood floors and deep red carpeting, gilt-framed paintings and wide hallways hung with huge windows. You won’t be bored here: as well as local entertainment, there are walking trails (dogs welcome, £25 per night), four acres of walled gardens, a nine-hole golf course and a cookery school. The stylish and airy spa offers a variety of thermal experiences as well as indoor and outdoor pools. The room was very comfortable, although in need of updating, it had sloe gin, local books and a very large bathroom.

However, just 10 minutes from the coast and the hustle and bustle of Scarborough, the hotel has the feel of being in the countryside surrounded by fields, forests and beautiful gardens. This former Victorian farmhouse, all ivy-covered goldstone and cream stained glass windows, has been carefully extended to add more wings and two terraces with beautiful water views. Inside, the aim was to retain the feel of a cottage, but with the smartness of a country house. Dogs are very welcome (£10 per night) and can dine in the conservatory with their owners. All 32 rooms are a reasonable size, some with four-poster beds.
The Devonshire Fells are set in some of North Yorkshire’s most stunning countryside, with walking paths, footpaths and the picturesque village of Dales nearby. The hotel is part of the Duke of Devonshire’s 30,000-acre Bolton Abbey estate, six miles south of the ruins of the 12th-century abbey that bears its name. The corridors of the elegant Victorian building, lined with bright pink and charcoal striped carpets, are the work of the Duchess of Devonshire, who occasionally scoured the family seats at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire for antiques and paintings. Most rooms have en-suite bathrooms and showers, and dogs are allowed in all rooms for £10 per night.

The King’s Head has undergone a sophisticated transformation to create a bright, semi-open ground floor that feels more like a lounge than a bar. There’s a chandelier above the wooden-floored bar, which serves cakes and scones, as well as regular beer pumps, a wood-burning stove, feature wallpaper and smart plaid sofas in the lounge. Dogs are welcome (£10 per night) and information packs on local walks (ranging from easy walks to long hikes) can be borrowed.
The delightful Wensleydale Heifer is a charming 17th-century inn on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, surrounded by beautiful countryside. There are 13 rooms in total, 9 in the original building with traditional decoration and four themed rooms in the new annexe across the courtyard – the James Herriot room comes with the ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ set. The excellent restaurant features a specialty fish bar, a casual traditional bar and a wood-panelled lounge with an open fire and fine whiskeys. Dogs are allowed in the bar and some rooms (£20 per dog per night).

There are eight self-catered stone cottages and one private residence. Dog owners should choose a cabin or one of the castle’s 28 rooms to welcome their four-legged friends. Off-road vehicles can take guests around the property, and shooting and fishing can be arranged upon request.
