Although Singapore is literally surrounded by beaches, I personally don’t like beach days. While I love the idea of playing in the sand, reading books on the beach and spending quality time with family, packing food, finding picnic mats, and using dirty public restrooms is more hassle than it’s worth. Also, many public beaches have some amount of trash on them and are not as clean or pristine as they should ideally be.
Where To Take My Family On Vacation
A friend who practically lives by the beach introduced me to the concept of beach clubs in Sentosa. Given my distaste for the actual performance of Beach Day, I was intrigued by the idea. Does it make planning a beach vacation less stressful?
The Mini Vacation Experience With My Family
There are several beach clubs in Sentosa – Tanjung Beach Club, Rumors Beach Club, Ola Beach Club and FOC Sentosa which is a restaurant but operates in a similar way. The idea is simple – there are minimal costs on weekends (typically $100/daybed) and most weekends ($200/daybed) with very affordable food and drink. For those of you who are mostly clubbing (pre-pandemic), the idea is similar to how we achieve the minimum cost to get a table.
The Beach Club offers comfortable accommodation, luxurious sunbeds and a semi-private beach. I only had to bring my own sunscreen, swimsuit, towel, etc.
I reserved the sunbeds on the sand for the most authentic beach experience. Outdoor restaurant tables, picnic tables and poolside lounge chairs are some of the other types of seating available. For sunbathing and lounging, a chaise longue or sun lounger will do, but for a fancy family “picnic”, picnic tables can also look very exotic.
The beds are large, easily fit 4 or 5 people and are definitely more comfortable than a picnic mat. Beds and picnic tables come with large beach umbrellas that provide shade from the sun.

The seats are also well spaced out, especially given the current social restrictions, so even with all the news that was taken, the area never felt crowded.
All the beach clubs had a decent sized pool which is great if you want to cool off in the water without getting salty. It was a great place for kids, families to play. My daughter had fun playing in the pool and playing with some kids who were building in the sand.
Beach clubs vary in food choices. Tanjung Beach Club’s menu offered a more typical western cafe, while FOC was heavily Spanish and Mediterranean, and Rumors Beach Club offered western and Indonesian food. If you have certain dietary preferences, this may also weigh on your choice of venue.
I expected the food to be quite acceptable – however the location is probably the main attraction and only the food and drinks cost the least. I was surprised in both places. While Tanjong Beach Club’s food was of high quality and definitely Insta-worthy in its presentation, if a little more basic, FOC’s signature dish, the paella, blew us out of the water. I’m not entirely sure that Eggs Benedict and Paella Rice are on the beach, but I loved it. The drinks were very good and the view from the sand to the house itself. Another great advantage is the free flow of iced drinking water. No more dry mouth or hot water bottles baked in the sun!

In total, we ordered Catalan Pork Pate ($20), Iberico Pork Paella ($44), Basque Cheese ($14), 2 Flat Whites ($12) and a Lychee Cooler ($10) for about $120 FOC (including service charge).
Beach clubs also provided sturdy trays and small tables to put food on, so I didn’t need to balance plates on my lap, which meant I didn’t throw any of my food onto the sand.
Plus, the service at both locations is excellent, with attentive and friendly staff that make it easy to imagine staying at an exotic, remote seaside resort.
Of course, some other aspects of a day at the beach are unavoidable—sand getting into every crevice of your body, uncertain weather, and insect bites, to name a few. The good news, though, is that you have shelter at your fingertips and fun (and less crowded and much cleaner) showers to clean off the sand.

Overall, the beach experience sacrifices a little of the initial authenticity of a family beach day for less stress. If you miss beach holidays in exotic destinations like Bali or the Maldives, local beach clubs can capture that feeling. I was so hooked the first time I went back the next week. With everything I need at the beach at my fingertips, I can finally relax on the beach.

Although we are pretty tired of the epidemic at this point, the harsh reality is that it still exists in our lives. Airbnbs have strict COVID cleaning protocols that require them to be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected after each guest stay. However, if you want to be a little bolder, we recommend taking a few sanitizing wipes to additionally wipe frequently used surfaces and household items, including door handles and faucets, remote controls, toilet seats, and countertops. I always carry baby-friendly wipes in my bag because little ones touch everything (and put it in their mouths!).
Traveling with small children involves many stops/delays along the way. This is inevitable and comes with the territory, so lowering expectations in terms of a tight schedule is encouraged. Taking a cooler of items for your first Airbnb meal can save you some “hungry” moments with your little partner, who is probably already exhausted from the trip.
