Back in October of 2021, before the snow fell, I planned a day trip from Calgary to Kananaskis to finally experience hiking the Sarrail Range. Yes, I’m glad to finally cross this wonderful trip off your bucket list. If you’re planning a trip, visit between July and October to avoid the many hazards between Rawson Lake and the Surrail Range. Do not attempt to hike the Sarrail Range during the winter months.

Heart Creek Trail In Kananaskis Country
Note. The Sarrail Ridge Trail begins at Upper Kananaskis Lake and then turns onto the wooded Rawson Lake Trail. Experienced hikers will find the Rawson Lake trail easy to moderate, but others may find it a bit challenging. After passing Rawson Lake, you’ll face a steep climb to the Sarrail Ridge, followed by breathtaking views of the Upper and Lower Kananaskis, Mount Indefatigable, and the Rocky Mountain landscape.
If you are coming from Calgary, take the Trans-Canada Highway and then exit 118 for Kananaskis Country. Follow Highway 40 (Kananaskis Trail) approximately 50 kilometers to Peter Lougheed Provincial Park and turn right onto Kananaskis Lakes Highway. Head up to the Upper Kananaskis Lake Day Use Area for parking and take the trail to Surrail Ridge. During the summer months, arrive early to secure a parking space at this popular location.
Are you ready for a high mountain? The Sarrail Range Hike begins at the shores of Upper Kananaskis Lake, where many visitors enjoy the Upper Kananaskis Lake Family Trail with its turquoise blue waters and towering mountains. I left the parking lot and walked along the south side of Kananaskis Lake, admiring the fall scenery and winter weather. After about 20 minutes, cross the Surrail Creek Bridge to the turnoff for Rawson Lake and the signs to follow. Turn left and head towards Rawson Lake through the woods for about 1.7 miles.
Rawson Lake is a day trip in itself. When you reach the lake, admire the beautiful scenery behind you, then turn left around the lake. Follow the gentle path to the south shore of the lake before going right (north) to the higher part. At this point I could see Surrail Ridge ahead. Poles are required on an unofficial route longer than 350 meters per kilometer. But don’t worry, it works!
How To Hike Sarrail Ridge Via Rawson Lake In Kananaskis
After much excitement and huffing and puffing, Bella and I were greeted by a beautiful view from the column. Continue uphill for even better views of Upper and Lower Kananaskis Lakes. It is a difficult and difficult climb to the last peak east of the mountain (we did not do this part). In total, plan for 4 to 5.5 hours to cover the 11.5 km round trip.

The Sarrail Ridge is a difficult route that requires preparation. Bring a warm jacket and a waterproof jacket, even if there is no rain in the forecast.

Pets: Dogs are allowed but must be on a leash. Remember to carry it after your pet and consider bringing an unscented bag with you.
