Best Dog Friendly States – As the saying goes, “dog is man’s best friend”. However, is this true in the world? In fact, animal rights vary around the world. In some countries, dogs are worshiped like children. In others, it is eaten like chicken. So, we decided to take a deeper look at dog work around the world. The results of our research are included in this in-depth list of dog-friendly countries to help you find out which are the best and worst countries to keep.
51 countries included in our study were selected based on available data. Unfortunately, in many countries, there is no information about veterinary medicine, especially dogs. We used an integrated approach to design our research and the following eight classification factors to determine scores for each country that indicate how well they treat their dogs.
Best Dog Friendly States
1. Animal Protection Index (from 0 to 50 points): This data comes from the Animal Protection Index (API) website. The API specifies a number of factors that determine its index, including detection of animal sensitivity, prevention of animal suffering, and whether animal welfare laws are in place.

2. Companion animals (from 0 to 50 points): Data are taken from the Animal Care Index. Pet tags are based on classifications A to G established by legislation to protect pets and other companion animals in the countries studied.
3. Animal Rights Laws (from 0 to 50 points): This data was obtained from the Wikipedia profile and verified by our team on animal rights by country. Points were awarded based on whether the state had animal welfare laws and whether those laws were enforced.
Note: Although many of the countries on our list have animal rights laws, we understand that these laws are not always enforced. There is no doubt that all these countries will implement these laws. However, animal rights laws are a necessary means of keeping animals safe from harm.
4. Animal sensitivity score (from 0 to 50 points): This measurement was obtained through API. Indications are determined by the country that has laws that address the ability of animals to experience consciousness.

It would have been useful to include a number of criteria, but limited by the lack of data in all countries. We found that many countries do not have the resources or the will to track specific animal problems, limiting our ability to collect data. We set specific criteria related to dog ownership and well-being in our limited data selection.
Each country has demonstrated its commitment to animal welfare laws, and there are many ways to prevent harm to your faithful companion. These countries score well for factors such as low rabies cases, available veterinary clinics and services, as well as animal-friendly conditions and low energy dog food.
Italy, New Zealand and France are the top three countries in terms of animal welfare environment. None of these countries have registered any new dog-eating practices. All have high rates of animal welfare per capita, with three states having specific animal welfare laws.
All fifteen countries with high rabies rates (except South Korea) have no animal welfare laws and very few veterinarians per capita. In addition, six of these countries have a common and documented practice of eating dog meat. Although it is still possible to have happy and healthy dogs in these countries, our results show that it is not good for the dogs themselves or their owners.

Compiled by Animal Welfare International, the Animal Welfare Index (API) ranks 50 countries around the world based on ten animal health and welfare issues. They are graded on a scale from A to G. Although not specific to dogs, we believe these issues are closely related to the health and well-being of the pet dogs we measure. Interestingly, no country received an A grade from the World Animal Protection Group.
We have carefully reviewed the laws of companion animals and their legal protection in our selected countries. This criterion is also provided by API and classified on a scale of A to G. animals
Some countries do not have effective animal welfare laws. This includes laws against cruelty to animals, unnecessary suffering to animals and awareness of animal welfare.
A country that legally recognizes that animals have rights (the ability to have emotions such as joy, fear, and pain) is more likely to have laws to protect animals from unnecessary suffering. However, we found 26 countries that had animal rights laws, but no animal sensitivity laws.

Although rabies has been eradicated in some parts of the world, it is still a serious problem in many countries. About 59,000 people die from rabies every year, most of them in Asia and Africa. Keeping a dog in a country with a high rate of rabies is dangerous. You can do everything you can to keep your dog safe from the disease, but in a country where rabies is still active, you cannot completely eliminate the risk.
Your dog’s ability to be healthy and happy depends in large part on his access to quality health care. Especially in an emergency, being close to a vet can be life or death for your dog.
Finally, and perhaps most controversially, we include measurements of registered dog food and ongoing dog food consumption, deducting 100 points from countries that are still active. We do not offer brands in non-breeding countries.

Yes, we were surprised too. Although this practice is controversial, many stories still exist in Switzerland, especially in rural areas such as Lucerne, Appenzell, Jura, St. Galen and Bern Canton. Although it is difficult to determine its exact nature, our in-depth investigation of the topic revealed that many people admit to having a family member who ate dog or cat meat in them.
Efforts have been made to petition the government to add to existing animal cruelty laws that prohibit the commercial sale of dog and cat food, including slaughter and private consumption. However, as of this writing in 2022, killing and eating dogs is still legal in Switzerland, as a petition received only 16,000 of the 50,000 signatures needed to launch a referendum on the issue through Switzerland’s system of direct democracy. has done
Many countries have talked about eating dog for a long time and consider it a part of their food culture. While animal rights activists strive for change, some cultures are pushed back. In fact, dog food festivals are held all over China. While some people in countries like South Korea and Indonesia view dog meat as a health or medicinal product, countries are beginning to deal with the consequences of illegal dog meat distribution. That said, about 30 million dogs are killed annually in Asia just for food and medicine.
