Each national park has its own rules about where pets are and are not allowed. Understanding these rules can help you avoid getting into trouble and even getting fined.
If you are planning to stay at Zion Wildflower Resort, you may be wondering if dogs are allowed in Zion National Park. The answer is yes – but there are strict rules you must follow.
Pets are not allowed on any trails, wilderness areas, or public buildings in Zion National Park. The only exception is the Paras Trail, where pets are allowed. If you want to visitZion and enjoy hiking other than the Paras Trail during your trip, plan at least part of your trip on your pet.
You can walk your dog along the path in the park. However, they are not allowed on a shuttle bus. So if you want to visit the park with pets to stay at the Zion National Park resorts while the shuttle buses are running, you have to park at the park entrance or Springdale and come to the park.
Zion National Park (u.s. National Park Service)
Each national park has its own rules about where pets are and are not allowed. But most parks share the same rules that pets and their owners must follow. Most of these are common sense rules that you already know as a responsible dog owner.
For example, even if you are hiking in the wilderness, you are always responsible for picking up your pet’s poop and transporting it to the trash. Animals must also be on a leash – in most cases a 6-foot leash or less. Never let your pet mistreat wild animals.
An exception to these rules is service animals. Trained service animals are allowed on all tracks, as well as in buildings and shuttle buses. Emotional support or comfort animals are not considered service animals. Therefore, they must follow the same rules as pets.
Checking the rules of each national park you plan to visit in advance will help you plan your trip better and avoid disappointment. Remember that breaking the rules can lead to fines and a quick end to your excursion.

As we have already mentioned, another challenge that comes with planning a trip with your pet is finding accommodations that suit them, making your stay more comfortable for you and your four-legged friend. Before you search for “luxury hotels near me,” consider whether the hotel is a good choice, even if it allows pets.
Some hotels allow pets. However, they can get clogged and are not ideal for your pets. Sound from surrounding rooms can also bounce through thin walls. This can make your pets nervous or even bark.
Fortunately, there is a simple solution. For an additional nightly fee, Zion Wildflower Resort welcomes your four-legged family members. Since Zion is not “dog friendly” like most national parks, we have always been hesitant to drive through the Zion National Park area on our trip to Utah. On our last trip, we decided to give it a try and settled on the pet-friendly Zion White Bison. Located about a mile from the park’s west entrance, we used it as our base camp to drive through the park and explore all the dog-friendly spots on both sides of the entrance. All I can say is – I’m absolutely glad we finally decided to go and while there aren’t many dog friendly activities in the park, there are plenty outside.
We stayed at the pet friendly Cliff Residences in Zion White Bison and we loved it. Modeled after ancient Anasazi kivas, our dog-friendly cliff dwelling had the most charming and colorful interior, featuring a king-size bed, living room area with sofa and TV, full kitchen, bathroom, and upstairs deck. A dining table and fire pit, grill, and our own private hot tub overlooking the beautiful mesas and canyons around us!
Zion National Park Cabin
Zion White Bison is rated one of the top five camping resorts in the US, they have pet friendly wagons, tipis, and cliff dwellings and I already can’t wait to plan a return trip! While Zion National Park itself has no pet-friendly trails, the drive through the park is purely scenic, and there are plenty of dog-friendly adventures on both sides of the park.
Snow Canyon State Park – (Note that many trails in the park require an entrance fee) We loved the red rock in this park and had a great time checking out the countless trails, caves, petrified sand dunes, coal and more. Little Slot Canyon.
Pink Coral Sand Dunes State Park – (entrance fee required) The dunes are estimated to be 10,000 to 15,000 years old, and you can rent ATVs or sand boards to get around the dunes, but we enjoyed walking and playing. In the sand!
Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness / Kanab Area – This 112,500-acre wilderness area is filled with hiking trails, slot canyons, rock formations, and picturesque mountains, and the options for dog-friendly adventures are endless! It was quite wet and the roads were quite washed out and the canyon was flooded when we left so we had to make a few last minute changes to the plan – but there is no shortage of things to do here!
What Time Should I Get To Zion National Park?
After days of exploring, we retire to our hillside lounge and watch the sun set from our rooftop hot tub. The Zion White Bison property is full of character and there is a herd of white bison for you to see too (a calf was born two days after we went). The white bison is a very rare and sacred animal, and a generation ago one in 10 million bison was born white. Currently, it is estimated that one in a million is white. The
