Dog Friendly Things To Do In L.a. (2024 Guide)
Recently, my boyfriend and his Mini Goldendoodle took a long trip to LA. From Rancho Palos Verdes to Santa Monica, we’ve covered a lot of ground. This list contains my favorites. The puppy loves them as much as we do and we can support them all by ourselves.
I will add more hikes to this blog as I do them so you can bookmark it or pin it to Pinterest. Given how much we enjoy the roads in SoCal, I know I’ll be on another one soon.
As with all hikes in Southern California, be sure to bring plenty of water with you and your dog, and a blanket or towel for your car in case Fido gets dusty. is mud, string (sounds obvious, but I’ve seen it happen). and a bag to clean up the mess left on the trail.
If it’s a hot day, consider starting your hike early in the morning or later in the afternoon. This is especially true if you are walking on a road with little or no shade. It helps to keep your dog as calm as possible when you are outside.

Don’t forget to look for coyotes, rattlesnakes and poison oak trees along the trail. Watch yourself and your friends get angry about ticks after you leave. They are found on some sidewalks in the LA area and can cause Lyme disease in both humans and dogs.
First on my list of the best beach-friendly hikes in Los Angeles is one at Rancho Palos Verdes’ Portuguese Bend Preserve. Four-legged friends are allowed to stay here, and it is a popular place to go to the mountains and enjoy the view of the Pacific Ocean.
Located southeast of Del Cerro Park, Portuguese Bend Reserve is a 399-hectare reserve on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Established in 2005, it is the largest conservation area in the 1,400-hectare Palos Verdes Conservation Area. It is known for its rolling hills, dramatic canyons and cliffs.
The Portuguese Bend Reserve trail network is open to hikers, bikers, horse-riders and dog walkers. It’s a great place to get away and enjoy southern California.

There are many routes to choose from, varying in length and difficulty. Considering the downhill slope of the reserve, remember that no matter where you go, you will eventually climb back up.
Me and my boyfriend, and his dog will be going for a loop starting on Burma Road. It is the main entrance to Crenshaw Blvd. The view of the beach and Catalina Island is spectacular from here.
The trip takes a total of 2 hours. It’s a great way to get outside and enjoy the beautiful views of the area at the same time. Although the hills are not too challenging, they are not too steep for your liking. Overall, we liked it.

Next on my list of the best beach-friendly hikes in Los Angeles is the one at San Vicente Mountain Park. Anchor Road has everything from the famous Mulholland Drive to the site of the original Nike armor. Located in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, it’s a fun place to get outdoors.
San Vicente Mountain Park is east of Santa Monica Mountain west of the 405 Freeway and above Encino Reservoir. This 10.2 hectare site is full of history and fun to explore by walking the grounds.
This round trip begins on Mulholland Drive and is approximately two miles. It has a wide dirt road with a slight front as it goes from the highway side of the road to the former military base. An easy hike with flat terrain, great views and little climbing.
The journey takes about an hour. If you and your dog are in good health, you can do it easily. If you want to spend time researching weapons (it’s worth it), consider that too.

That’s in no small part because its extensive street network offers spectacular views of everything from downtown LA to Century City, the Griffith Observatory, the Hollywood sign and other Los Angeles landmarks.
I hiked Mt Hollywood here with my boyfriend and his dog. After stopping at the Merry Go Round Lot, we followed Fern Canyon Road to Upper Beacon Road, then turned right and continued to lookout on Vista Del Valle Drive. From there we took the Hogback Trail to Dante’s Lookout.
The trip took about 2.5 hours in total. We left at 9:30 on a hot morning and we felt like we had to leave first. That’s our only regret though as the route is amazing and the views are worth the climb.

Like many others on my list, this method gets a lot of sun. It is better to come early in the morning or later in the day if it is hot outside.
I hiked the Mandeville Canyon Trail with my boyfriend and his dog. After parking on Westridge Road, we followed the light trail up the hill. There are many turns and stairs and we had fun walking around there and making our own way.
