Vaccinations for your pets fall into two categories: essential and regionally non-essential vaccines. Non-regional vaccines are recommended by veterinarians in this area to ensure your pet is vaccinated against diseases common to the Central Valley.
Basic Dog/Pully Regional Vaccinations: Leptospirosis, Bordetella, Canine Influenza and Rattlesnake. (This vaccine may or may not be recommended depending on the dog’s risk).
Cat/Feline Core Vaccines: Feline Leukemia. (This may or may not be recommended, depending on the risk of the vaccine to the cat.)

SINGAPORE – She owns dogs, has been a dog therapist for seven years and has run a dog adoption center for over ten years.
However, Ruth Lim, 47, has not had her dogs vaccinated for at least the past five years. All of them are over 10 years old, or the same as a person in their 50s and 60s.
Ms Lim is part of a minority of pet owners in Singapore who are careful to vaccinate their pets.

On November 18, the Veterinary and Veterinary Services (AVS) from the National Parks Council (NParks) and the Singapore Veterinary Association released joint vaccination guidelines for domestic dogs and cats.
The Singapore Vaccination Guide 2020 lists core and non-core vaccinations for dogs and cats, and provides recommendations for animals at different life stages and living environments, including single pets, multi-pets and indoor shelters.
Primary dog vaccines protect against canine distemper virus, canine adenovirus and canine parvovirus. The main vaccine for cats protects against feline parvovirus, feline calicivirus and feline herpes virus.
AVS and the Singapore Veterinary Association said: “The guidelines will improve awareness and understanding of the importance of pet vaccination among various stakeholders, including pet owners, animal welfare groups and the pet trade.”

In September, a deadly disease that mainly affects rabbits was discovered in Singapore, and AVS said it was working with veterinary clinics and distributors to import and register the vaccines.
In general, guidelines recommend that adult dogs and cats receive a booster vaccination within 1 year of the puppy or kitten’s primary vaccination.
Generally, the main vaccines are given at annual booster intervals, but the guidelines state that veterinarians may recommend different booster vaccines after evaluating the animal and talking to the owners.
The doctors who spoke today said that they will adjust the vaccination schedule based on the evaluation of the animals.

For Ms Lim, she vaccinates her dogs when they are puppies and then alternates years until they are five years old. “I realized that annual vaccinations are unnecessary,” he said.
Her dogs go for annual checkups and vaccinate them if they are exposed to dangerous situations, such as traveling abroad.
He worries about possible side effects of vaccines, such as depression. According to veterinarians, the vaccine can last two to three years, so annual vaccinations are not necessary.
Lim will spend money to ensure the dog’s health and immunity. “I would be very worried if I had to take it every year to be vaccinated.”

She has also met other pet owners who don’t feel the need to vaccinate their dogs, especially as they get older.
Another pet owner, Mrs Verge, 51, also believes that vaccinating pets is “absolutely unnecessary”. The company coordinator has been a dog hunter for 10 years.
Instead of taking her to the clinic, she uses alternative methods to keep the 12-year-old dog healthy, such as probiotics and rice water to treat her diarrhea.
“It’s what works for us and what works,” he said. It worked for us, but it may not work for other people.

Retiree Lucy Tan, 65, gave her 13-year-old dog as a baby and that was it. “I think it’s OK (to continue vaccinating).” She said her dog is healthy, so vaccinations don’t cross her mind.
When 48-year-old advertising executive Jean-Paul and his family first got the Labrador, they took him to meet three puppies. Four hours after the third injection, his face began to swell and he had to be taken to the hospital.
His dog is now 19 months old and Mr Paul is considering giving him his annual vaccination after consulting his vet.
For Elaine Tan, 32, a marketing manager, instead of giving her six-year-old dog the usual vaccinations, she left for a titer test – which measures the level of antibodies – before adopting the dog.

The result shows that only the leptospirosis vaccine is needed and he will take the dog to the vaccination in December.
Ms Tan went into the Tet trial after coming across a study showing that over-vaccination can cause cancer in dogs. However, he said the study was ineffective because there were too many factors involved.
Dr. Casey Tan, senior veterinarian at Mont Pleasant Vet Center (Sarangon North), said some owners worry about over-vaccinating their pets, especially as they get older.
But he said they shouldn’t worry. Owners of older pets have the option of requesting a serology test or antibody titer test to verify vaccination, which is available to recommend vaccination.
Traveling Shot Clinics
Dr Tan said most owners at his clinic are aware of their pets’ vaccinations, but 10 to 15 per cent refuse vaccinations.
“20 to 30 percent of pet owners either don’t know the importance of vaccination or think it’s unnecessary.”
Dr Chua Hui Lee, House Call Vet Senior SG and Chief Veterinarian, said that while some of these owners do not know the importance of vaccination, others may be “a bit scared”.
She said many get their puppy shots, but may be reluctant to get their annual vaccinations.

“Or they say their dog doesn’t go outside and they haven’t vaccinated their dog in years,” he added.
Dr. Liang Sutian, who has been a veterinarian for 12 years, said he has not come across many pet owners who oppose vaccinations.
However, some may have a negative reaction to the vaccine after the pet’s sterile rash – swelling at the injection site – after the previous vaccination.
With the latest guidelines released by the authorities, Hauskal Vet SG’s Dr Chua said it would help vets explain the importance of vaccinations, especially to clients who are afraid of getting vaccinated or who believe vets are pushing annual vaccinations to make money.

Confused pet owners can refer to the guidelines and ask their veterinarian for more information, she said.
“At least there’s a proper official data sheet,” he said. I don’t want to go online and Google all these diseases (and prevention methods). We don’t know exactly where you should go to find the information.
Dr. Chua added that not many consumers turn to the Internet for information to make a decision, but he knows some. “Some are smarter than others and some can still see us,” he says.
Dr. Michelle Lowe, a veterinarian at Polaris Veterinary Services, said the guidelines are helpful. “There are clear guidelines on uniform vaccination levels.”
