On a day when you’re looking for a challenging hike but don’t want to spend all day doing it, Arthur’s Rock is the way to go. Located in Lowry State Park, this 1.7-mile trail is easily accessible from downtown and puts you in the open mountain range in minutes. We were able to make one more trip this year before we needed to winterize our van. We had planned to go to the ski town of Telluride, CO in the summer, but ended up postponing the trip to follow our state’s COVID travel restrictions. We finally went at the end of September and it was perfect as we could see the leaves changing.
More on the gondola in a bit, but first let’s talk about the accommodation. The city of Telluride has limited RV options: there are no private campgrounds in town, and the Town Park campground is reservation-only and was not available for our dates. You can find boondocking sites 30-60 minutes outside of town, either close but a slow drive or farther but on the highway, but near Telluride finding the campsite with a working cell data signal (free or paid) is a real challenge. In the coming years, we would like to come back with a reservation and explore the city more for a few days, walking from the city park.
Dog Friendly Adventures Perfect For Colorado Summers
I needed to work on Friday so we chose a boondocks in the “prime area” on the east end of Million Dollar Road because we already knew a reliable cell signal. Which has a bunch of other campers too!
Although the main camping area is very crowded, it is a good place to stay for two nights. We did many hikes right from the van and experienced the changing of the leaves.
With work done on Friday, we were ready to explore Telluride on Saturday. We started early and enjoyed a beautiful sunrise on Million Dollar Road before walking 30 minutes into town.
You’ll want to do your research on parking in Telluride before you arrive. The sign is not good, better if you know where you are going. The city does not allow overnight RV parking, street parking is generally metered, and parking is somewhat restricted for larger vehicles. said Tommy
