Vacation Dog Bumper – While most fans have memorized every line of “National Lampoon’s Vacation,” some behind-the-scenes moments are unforgettable.
To celebrate the anniversary of the film’s release on July 29, 1983, here are 20 things you didn’t know about the original “Vacation.”

1. Anthony Michael Hall, played by Rusty Griswold, was going through puberty at the time of the shooting. He grew three inches during production and, as a result, has a different height throughout the film.

2. The film was written by John Hughes (who also wrote other ’80s classics like “The Breakfast Club” and “Sixteen Candles”), and is based on the story “Vacation ’58.” National Lampoon magazine in 1979.
3. The filming of “Vagazini” required a real life path for the cast and crew. The shooting took place in more than 15 locations in four countries.
4. “Vacation” is an R-rated movie in the series. In his DVD commentary, director Harold Ramis said he was worried that the National Lampoon-style comedy might have had too much edge for the director’s style, and he was especially embarrassed by the scene in St. I got the political order wrong.”
5. Five Wagon Ratu Family Trucksters are used in rotation during the production of the film, so each is changed in various ways for the use and wear of the car during the Griswolds’ journey.

6. In a scene early in the film, Clark (Chevy Chase) helps Ellen (Beverly D’Angelo) clean the dishes, but she never washes them or puts them in the dishwasher. But he wiped it off with a rag and put it back in the cupboard. Chase said it was one of his favorite parts of the film, but said it went unnoticed by most fans.
7. In the family singing scene, Chase notes that Beverly D’Angelo is a very good singer. Before “Holiday” he took part in the musical “Hair” of 1979.
8. When trying to find a gas cap for the Clark family truckster in the gas station scene, Chase didn’t want to throw away the plate when he got it. The plate flew over him and hit the actress who had stopped at the pump next to her. Then the look of concern on Chase’s face became real.
9. Christie Brinkley was a superstar in the modeling industry when production began and the studios wanted her in a movie. While he only appeared in a few scenes, he traveled with the cast and crew for much of the filming. “Vacation” was her first film credit and she reprized the role for the 1997 sequel “Vegas Vacation”.

10. Based on Randy Quaid, Cousin Eddie’s trademark language clicked on someone he knew in high school and marked every point in the script where he wanted to match the voice.
12. Imogen Coca, who played Aunt Edna, was reluctant to take the role because she worried she wasn’t bad enough. “She’s one of the sweetest women in the world,” Chase said of Coca. However, producer Matty Simmons talked Coca into taking the part, promising that she is a brilliant actress who can play any role.
13. Chase and James Keach, who played highway patrol officers, greatly improved the scene where the two Clarks accidentally kill Edna’s dog Dinky by forgetting to open the untie from the bumper of the back. They both tried to stifle their laughter at the scene.
14. Stunt coordinator Dick Zeiker made a bet to other crew members that the Truckster Family would be able to jump more than 50 meters during the desert scene. Zeeker won the bet.

15. Lindsay Buckingham’s “Holiday Road”, which served as the film’s theme song, peaked at number 82 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart due to the film’s popularity.
16. In the father and son scene of Clark and Rusty where the two share a beer, the beer may actually be empty and they both have to pretend to take a swig from it.
17. Hughes’ original script captures Clarke arriving at Valley World to find the park closed and the Griswolds holding the men and top executives hostage in front of Roy Wally (played by Eddie Bracken). The ending was filmed in its entirety, but was eventually scrapped because it did not play well in front of a test audience. Director Harold Ramis believes that the film was built on the promise of seeing Valley World, and the audience was deceived by that reward. As a result, Hughes had Hughes write an alternate ending in which the Griswolds plowed the garden. For the rewritten scenes, he played John Candy as Lasky, one of the park’s security guards, who became one of the most memorable characters in the film. The cast and crew then went back and took a new ending and cut back to the original. According to Ramis, the test marketing went through the roof after the ending was changed.
19. The Wally World parking lot scene was filmed at Santa Anita Race Course in Arcadia, California. During filming it was over 100 degrees and the scene prompted the crew to run from the car to the park gate. Hall said he remembers trying to beat Chase in the race to Gates, but Chase had eight inches on him at the time.

20. Scenes in the park were filmed at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California. The cast had to ride the roller coaster so many times that they had scared and nauseated looks on their faces.
