The process took Helen about four months before she left. As you can imagine, there is a lot of paperwork to fill out and medical requirements to be met for both Europe and Singapore. Helen had to make sure Coco got used to her carrier for the long flight, which meant time had to be spent on carrier training. Fortunately, Coco has been potty trained from a young age, so she can usually urinate and swallow on demand. Therefore, he did not have any problems on the plane, as he relieved himself in the airport toilet before boarding the flight.

Due to strict quarantine controls such as rabies vaccination, rabies serology tests and all the paperwork, they spent many sleepless nights reading about the quarantine requirements. This was a crucial stage as they did not want to risk having Coco quarantined in a foreign country and/or on her way home to Singapore. Many countries require a rabies vaccination, annual core vaccination, etc. before arrival. Therefore, if you plan to take your dog abroad, make sure that all the documents are filled out correctly.
The most difficult step for Helen was mapping out the schedule and digesting the documents required for foreigners in Singapore.
After all, the last thing she wants is for Coco to be quarantined upon her return to Singapore (or unable to enter a foreign country) due to lack of requirements.
Another challenge is circumstances beyond your control, e.g. You cannot predict or control how your dog will behave and whether he will be uncomfortable with increased air pressure or constant engine noise with his keen hearing. Additionally, dogs must behave on the plane (no barking or screaming), and they must remain in the pet carrier for the entire flight. Also, you don’t know if your front, back, or side neighbors are dog-sensitive. They can give you trouble. 🙁
Taking Your Pet Abroad
In addition, Helen and her husband had to search for pet-friendly accommodation in Europe, as not all hotels are dog-friendly. Fortunately, they found that about 70% of European hotels are dog-friendly, which makes it easy.
Planning Coco’s meals ahead of time since she is on a raw or homemade diet is a consideration. However, this means they need to look for accommodation with a kitchenette where they can properly store their food in the hotel fridge.
First, you need to get your dog microchipped. Microchip insertion can be done at any accredited veterinarian for a nominal fee. A microchip is a unique, permanent ID that permanently associates your name and contact information with your dog.
After microchipping your dog, the next step is to vaccinate your dog against rabies. Rabies vaccination should be administered AFTER, NOT before, microchip implantation. Vaccination must be given a minimum of 21 days BEFORE your dog enters the EU. Your dog must be at least 12 weeks old (although there are some exceptions for bringing young dogs).
Dog Friendly France: Travelling In France With A Dog
As Singapore is a ‘listed’ country, your dog is not blood tested for rabies antibodies to enter the EU.
Often, a licensed veterinarian can provide a veterinary health certificate in the office; be sure to ask. If not, you must print the certificate and take it to the vet to complete. Before visiting the vet, make sure you have the correct health certificate based on your country of origin. Also, make sure the certificate is for non-commercial transport of animals.
If you are traveling from a non-EU country such as Singapore, your dog must have an EU animal health certificate issued by an official state veterinarian in the country of departure no later than 10 days before your dog’s arrival in the EU.
The certificate is valid for travel between EU countries for 4 months or until the rabies vaccination expires, whichever comes first.

In addition, you must also add a written declaration to your animal’s EU animal health certificate and state that the move is for non-commercial reasons. This declaration is also required if your pet is traveling under the responsibility of a person authorized by you. In this case, your pet must be reunited with you within 5 days of your move.
If you are traveling with your dog to Finland, Ireland, Malta, Norway or Northern Ireland, you must treat it against Echinococcus tapeworm 24 to 120 hours before the trip. All treatment details must be entered in your pet passport or EU health certificate.
Helen and her husband were relieved and proud that Coco handled the flight well. Unlike some crying children or naughty children, he did not make noise or disturb the other passengers. In fact, some passengers didn’t even realize Coco was on the plane until it was time to board.
Because Coco is not an assistance dog or emotional support animal (ESA), she had to stay in the pet carrier during the 13-hour flight to Germany, which she did, except when she was taken to the bathroom to pee. He’s usually a lap dog, which means he likes to lie down, daydream, and not do much around the house (except watch Helen work). He is a low-energy dog, and Helen believes that these characteristics make him easier to be around on long flights. If your dog is hyper, territorial or just irritable, you may want to consider taking your dog outside.

Coco and her family arrived in Frankfurt, rented an SUV and drove around Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria and Liechtenstein. A total of 5 countries in almost 3 weeks.
Coco’s most memorable moment in Europe was at Jungfrauich (Switzerland), the continent’s highest station at 3,454 meters above sea level. The observatory is located at an altitude of 3571 meters, which is very high for the station. The Jungfraujoch (or “Peak of Europe”) is nicknamed despite not being the highest peak in Europe. Opened in 1912, this station is located just below the Sphinx Observatory and is connected to the Europa Tower.
The experience of riding the cable car and then crossing the train ARF was huge with spectacular views. The ladies exclaimed that it was truly a once in a lifetime experience. And Coco was enjoying herself as she walked on snow for the first time. Luckily, Helen brought Coco’s boots so her paws wouldn’t get cold. It was summer, so they hadn’t brought enough warm clothes for them because they didn’t expect it to be this cold. Coco was shivering in the snowy mountains in her three skinny tops and Helen’s scarf. :/
