Rachel Johnson and her husband Nate founded 2 Traveling Dogs in 2011. They write a daily dog that highlights the RV adventures of rescue dogs Peanut Butter Brickle and Digby Pancake as they travel the US to highlight animal rescue. With over 1 million followers On social media, they use their platform to encourage others to adopt pets and live together while traveling!
Both mountain and ocean views can be seen when you drive your RV in the Northeast! Major cities like New York, Boston and Philadelphia also offer a slice of history and culture. This area has it all, but like the places we visited, Brickell and Digby have the most dog-friendly RV destinations in the Northeast.
Eleven states make up the northeastern region of the United States, including Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The northeast has a varied climate, with very cold winters. But visiting this area in the summer makes for great hiking, and the fall colors will inspire you to get outside with your dog.
Our favorite part of traveling is the food, and this place has everything from Boston Baked Beans, Wild Blueberries, Casserole, Chowder, Bread and Apples! Our dogs Brickell and Digby definitely have their favorites! Maybe we shared a blueberry pie in Maine!
Dog Friendly Vacations Across The United States
There are over 19 acres on the banks of Connecticut’s Mystic River. Mystic Seaport is the largest maritime museum in the United States. But it really is a park! Walk your dog and see the beautiful old boats and learn about the maritime lifestyle common to this part of New England. Pets must be on a leash and are welcome in all outdoor areas. Pets can also accompany you on a narrated cruise on the waterfront, as long as the size of the tour allows dogs on the boat! Choose RV resorts in the area that offer water views and dogs are welcome!
Delaware is the second largest state in the country, but it also offers five great state parks to camp in! We enjoyed Kilns Pond State Park near Felton, Delaware. Killens Pond is the perfect place to take a kayak, canoe, boat or rowboat and take your dog for a walk on the pond! The Kilns Pond State Park campgrounds have 59 dog-friendly single-family campsites with electric and water hookups.
You must have heard of the famous Bar Harbor, Maine. But have you heard of Bass Harbor? We couldn’t stop talking about this destination years after our visit. Bass Harbor, Maine, is on the “back” side of Mount Desert Island, home to much of Acadia National Park. It is located in the southwest of the island. Our favorite dog friendly hike right from Bass Harbor Campground to Bass Harbor Head Light! It is located here on park land a short distance southeast of the port. It is one of the most photographed and recognized lighthouses in the United States. We still remember the sound of the water, the floats and the birds. We feel really peaceful. After a day of picking wild blueberries and eating pie, this trip was perfect. Don’t forget there are over 100 miles of trails open to dogs in Acadia National Park!
Cape Cod in Massachusetts is truly an experience. Cape Cod is a hook-shaped peninsula in the US state of Massachusetts. It’s a popular summer destination, but visiting off-season is a great way to beat the crowds. Ancient villages, lighthouses, lakes and coves with ocean beaches and your dog’s playground. We had a great time Also visiting the great city of Hyannis and seeing the ferry. We decided to take the dog friendly ferry to Martha’s Vineyard too! Not all dogs have sea legs! Camping in your trailer on Cape Cod will give you a great home base for many destinations in Massachusetts. You will have a choice of rural or more expensive holiday options.

There is only one way to get to this island in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay, and that is by boat. Smith Island is located about 12 miles off the coast of Crisfield, Maryland. Walk to the pier in downtown Crisfield and board one of the passenger ferries that pass through. On this 45 minute ride, your dog will love the wind on his fur! However, Brickell was not too happy with this trip. Every dog is different. Tell your dog that this island was first mapped by Captain John Smith in 1608! No more than 200 people live here, many of them speak the local dialect. Take your time and walk the streets of the island to see the simple way of life. Don’t forget to taste the official state cake of Maryland, Smith Island Cake. Not many people or dogs can say they’ve been here. This is truly an adventure you will never forget.
The White Mountain National Forest in eastern New Hampshire ranges from montane hardwood forests to majestic alpine peaks. Experience amazing scenery, clear mountain lakes and streams, wildlife, and year-round outdoor recreation opportunities with your dog! Not many people think of rural areas and farms when they think of New Jersey. But Sussex, New Jersey will show you this situation differently! Pleasant Acres Campground Nestled in the mountains of rural Northwest New Jersey, Pleasant Acres Campground offers guests the opportunity to camp in a ranch-like setting! The fairs and farm animal antics are just the beginning. Our dogs love to see the farm animals and fly in the river. Plus, an epic dog-friendly hike is just around the corner at High Point State Park. This park is at the northern tip of New Jersey and has the highest elevation in the state. You can see New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania from above! If you get tired of the country life, just take a short car ride to the Big Apple. The best of both worlds is being right in your cowboy boots.
Warwick, New York is known for its wineries, farming community, and its annual October festival, Applefest. Warwick is a dog-friendly destination for travelers who want to get lost in nature. We picked up Brickell and Digby apples at an amazing farm stand and then visited some dog friendly wineries and cider houses! What could be better?

Have you heard of the Kinzua Bridge? Once you see and walk on the glass floor, you will never forget it. Our dogs certainly don’t forget! Kinzoa Bridge State Park is a 339-acre (137 ha) Pennsylvania park near Jewett Mountain. Kinzoa Bridge State Park has been selected by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and its Bureau of Parks as one of “Pennsylvania’s 25 Must-See Parks.”
At the time it was built in 1882, the Kinzua Bridge was the tallest railway bridge in the world, at 301 feet. The site, which still retains part of the original railway line, is a lovely place to stroll. Visitors with their dogs can walk 600 feet out to the remaining support tower, peer for miles into Kinzua Gorge and peer down to the partial glass platform at the end of the trail.
Our time in Rhode Island was short but memorable. Step back in time on a cliff walk with your dog in Newport, Rhode Island. The Cliff Walk along the East Shore of Newport, RI is world-renowned as a public access walk that combines the natural beauty of Newport’s coastline with the architectural history of Newport’s Golden Age. The trail winds for 3.5 miles, providing spectacular views of the horizon, as the Atlantic Ocean crashes into rugged cliffs, and the surf boils over the jagged rocks below. Dogs are allowed on a leash.
