The cottages reflect a growing trend of dog owners looking to incorporate their beloved pooches into their UK living environment. In fact, according to a new survey of 2,500 dog owners by a dog vacation home provider, 75% of owners plan to take their dogs on vacation in the next year.
A survey of UK dog owners taking their pets on board and analysis of accommodation booking data was commissioned by Canine Cottages to report on dog-friendly trends to 2024. This is because the number of dog owners in the UK is on the rise in pet ownership in the age of Covid*. In fact, the company has seen a 94% increase in dog orders since 2019.

The report looks at where dog owners will take their pets in the UK in 2024, with Westward Ho!, Keswick and Bude topping the list, with the North of England, Wales and Devon leading the way.
With Northumberland three times in the top ten, the north of England looks set to remain as attractive a destination for dog owners in 2024 as it was in 2023.
When dog owners were asked what holiday their dog would wear, the top three pet breeds for UK dog owners were multi-generational (40%), romantic (39%) and adventurous (17%). They consider it their dog. pet be a big part of the family, whether it’s part of a big celebration or taking them on an annual family vacation with grandparents, kids, aunts and uncles.
Country cottages (42%) and seaside cottages (40%) were the top two types of accommodation for dogs, with 29% of dog owners also choosing cabins/cabins. Internal data from Canine Cottages also shows that barns, bungalows and cottages are popular dog booking options.

While city walks (92%) and country walks (87%) are most enjoyed on dog-friendly holidays, more than four-fifths believe that cooking at the cottage (81%) is also an important activity. , which shows that pet owners appreciate a convenient kitchen space as part of a dog-friendly living space.
Other preferences include eating out in bars and restaurants (79%) and visiting local tourist attractions (74%). There are many examples in the UK where both are happy to welcome dogs – some going the extra mile with food, water bowls and exercise equipment.
Interestingly, preferences shifted between different age groups, with Gen Z favoring shopping and water sports, while Millennials favored water sports and land sports. Gen X and Boomers love to travel and cook at home.

Leamington, Hampshire offers 169 dog friendly walks from nature reserves to scenic coastal paths. With 35 veterinary practices within 20 miles, pet parents can access the veterinary care they need.
Bournemouth came second with 58 vets and 45 dog-friendly hotels. With 87 hiking trails, 35 dog-friendly restaurants and 43 bars and pubs, the city is a great place for pet parents.
Tynemouth, a coastal town in north-east England, was third with 71 vets and 25 dogs. Half of the hotels in the city accept dogs, which makes it possible to find comfortable accommodation for guests.
