It’s a decision that pet parents face. We spoke to pet behavior consultant Emily Castle about taking your dog on holiday and what to consider before you go.

“Talk to your vet and tell them you’re going on holiday, where you’re going and how long you’re going to be there. This will help you understand what your dog needs. They may need special vaccinations in those areas, for example,” explained Emily.
To better prepare for your dog’s health and safety, Emily also recommends checking the airline’s requirements if you’re flying. Alternatively, if you’re driving cross-country, pet parents may need different records when crossing state lines, such as a health certificate or proof of rabies vaccination.
Emily stressed the importance of making it easy to spot your dog should he get lost on the trip. “The biggest security thing is if you’re taking your dog on holiday with a microchip! It’s good to be able to put multiple IDs on your dog, especially if it’s traveling in a crate. You can tag it underneath or on a leash, I suggest you’re the dog’s owner,” he said.
“Think long and hard about your vacation, what you want to get out of it and what your plans are,” says Emily. “It won’t really be a vacation, because it’s a lot of work to get the animals out of their habitat.”

Be prepared to go out of your way to make sure they have bathroom breaks, exercise comfortably and safely, and have no chance to escape.
“If you are going on a family vacation and doing daily activities such as amusement parks, the beach, museums, it is best to leave the dog at home with a good pet. That way you can have fun. The vacation, the dog is not tied up in an unknown place” Emily advises.
Does your dog like exotic places? Or do they live happily in their environment? If it’s the latter, many problems can be solved before you leave the house.

You have to understand (your dog) as a human, how they’re going to react to what you’re going through,” Emily explained. “I have a million questions. Will my dog get along with other dogs? Will the dog get along with other dogs? Should I put up with the stress of their breakup, but still go away?
While it may seem like a good idea to take them out at first, the best decision is to leave them at home.
“I work hard to help the owner see things from the dog’s perspective,” says Emily. “Is the holiday for you or the dog? Would it really be fun for them if it was their worst nightmare? Is this something we want to do or something I’m waiting for?”
Pet parents should carefully consider how their dog will feel during the holidays. While taking your dog to a new place can be fun, it can also be less fun.

“If you take a dog out of its normal, safe, calm environment and put it in a new environment — your dog’s never been in that situation before — you never know how it’s going to handle it,” he says. Emily.
Crates are very useful in creating a safe place for your dog and providing a comfortable environment.
“The crate is good when the dogs are overtired and need to rest a bit, it helps to calm them down mentally and keep them safe. Especially when our dogs are around unfamiliar people and leave doors open etc.” Emily said.
If your dog is around children, a crate can help set boundaries for your dog when it’s too difficult. “It’s also a good way to teach children to be aware of animals’ emotions and show them how to respect their emotions and moods,” says Emily. “It’s like going to the bathroom at a party! It gives us a moment. Breathe.”
