The term “noble cargo” does not only refer to the small ones. Make sure your four-legged friend is safe before you leave the driveway. Fortunately, there are many options for keeping your dog safe while on the road.
My personal preference is a dog-friendly harness, including a proper seat belt like EZYDOG or a seat belt. If your dog is comfortable in a real car seat, this is a good choice. Before moving, make sure the seat belt is tight on the dog and properly clicked into the belt jacket.

If you have a large vehicle with plenty of room to breathe and your dog does well in a crate, this may work for you. Note that you need to find a way to keep the soft case in place. Consider a non-shocking travel case. Note that a crate may not be the best option for stressed puppies.
If you have a large dog and even more cargo space, you can protect the fence with nets or metal bars. This also works if you have more than one dog and a designated vehicle space for them. Cargo latches can keep dogs from traveling in the vehicle, but they won’t keep your dog safe, so wear a seat belt.

When it comes to wet food, it should be very easy to buy the boxes or packages you need. However, be careful with the heat advice. For example, if your puppy needs to be kept on wet food (or dry food) at or below a certain temperature, you may need to make this adjustment. Pack a small cooler just for your dog’s food.
If you forget your dog’s food, run out, or think you can buy it when you get to your destination but can’t find it, buy food with a similar ingredient list and arm yourself with a secret ingredient: organic, canned pumpkin.
“The fiber in pumpkin makes this new food easier to digest,” says Jonas Devereux, clinical nutritionist and director of nutrition and health at Bow Wow Labs.
Don’t forget dog treats. You should include it in your food pantry. Also consider packing something extra to reward you for being a good boy or girl throughout the trip.

Don’t forget to pack your puppy vitamins and supplements. It is important to follow the dog’s regular feeding program – the path is no different. If your dog tends to get upset stomachs while traveling, consider ginger root as a remedy. “Ginger root helps to calm and soothe the stomach and is best given before a bowel movement,” suggests Devereux.
TPG Tip: Keep dog food and treats out of reach of your puppy in your vehicle so they are not tempted by familiar smells.
Just as you stock up on protein bars and emergency food mix, you should do the same for your loyal companion. There are many unknowns associated with the open road. You may be delayed by weather or car problems, and in that case you’ll need to pack extra dog food. (I like to pack at least two more days of food.)
Stopping for exotic foods and delicacies is obviously one of the best parts of the trip. There should be no exception to the rule when your puppy follows you. Once you’ve planned your route and itinerary, do your due diligence to find some spot stops. (While the occasional Starbucks can be fun, it’s best not to make it a daily treat.)
