Not every dog mom or dad has an easy time letting go of their pup (yay!). Why not take Buddy with you when it comes to summer vacations?
Best Dog Friendly Road Trips
For small children who do well in the car (my Frenchie Jackson loves traffic and good vibrations), road trips are a great way to include your canine companion in the adventure.
Lake Tahoe Road Trip
Unlike air travel, most vehicles offer plenty of room for your dog. It also offers the freedom and flexibility to plan and move around as you please, with ever-increasing options for dog-friendly housing.
Still on the fence? We’ve broken down everything you need to know, prepare and pack so you can take your favorite tail with you on your next fun road trip.
The term “noble cargo” does not only refer to the small ones. Make sure your four-legged friend is safe before you leave the driveway. Fortunately, there are many options for keeping your dog safe while on the road.
My personal preference is a dog-friendly harness, including a proper seat belt like EZYDOG or a seat belt. If your dog is comfortable in a real car seat, this is a good choice. Before moving, make sure the seat belt is tight on the dog and properly clicked into the belt jacket.

Yes, dog car seats are a thing. They also usually clip into the seat belt and can be attached to the dog’s leash or collar for a second level of safety. Or you can choose an additional seat like the Kurgo, which also provides a little more space by squeezing in and keeping the dog in place.
Want a cool vibe for your dog by creating a padded swing to keep your dog leashed? Zip up the comb – great for protecting dog hair and treating frizz. However, this option is best combined with a dog leash because a leash alone will not keep your puppy safe.
If you have a large vehicle with plenty of room to breathe and your dog does well in a crate, this may work for you. Note that you need to find a way to keep the soft case in place. Consider a non-shocking travel case. Note that a crate may not be the best option for stressed puppies.
If you have a large dog and even more cargo space, you can protect the fence with nets or metal bars. This also works if you have more than one dog and a designated vehicle space for them. Cargo latches can keep dogs from traveling in the vehicle, but they won’t keep your dog safe, so wear a seat belt.
Tour Of America Day 4 & 5
Dogs sleep an average of 14 hours a day, which means that once your pup is safely settled, he’ll need a comfortable place to relax and unwind while enjoying nature. Make sure your dog has enough space to stand, turn around and adjust if necessary.
A good rule of thumb is to give it the same amount of space as a regular dog bed. In fact, finding the right bed for your dog is an easy decision. Don’t want to take your regular dog bed with you when you travel? Buy one for the trip and have it cuddled at the event so your pup knows exactly what to expect on the day of departure. Bonus: they fill the bed not only with their disease, but also with the familiar smells of your home.
With so much packing and planning, don’t forget the essentials as well as toys and chews to keep your dog entertained throughout the trip.
These usually include a collar/bib (with a current ID tag) and leash, pet waste bags, and food and water bowls. Collapsible silicone bowls are practical and great for taking out.

Soft toys are very safe for travel. Consider soft toys that your dog won’t tear easily. Maybe leave the squeaky toys at home, as well as the string toys – both are choking hazards, and no constant buzzing basket will protect you.
Stock up on bones, gum, sticks and raw. However, be sure to pack for long periods of time or after check-in to your accommodation – this also creates a risk of suffocation. Stuffed cones, such as rubber Kong toys, also fall into this category.
If your child likes to play fetch, be sure to pack tennis balls, frisbees, and ball shooters for fenced-in dog pits and dog parks.
Everyone has to eat, including Bowser. Dogs eat two types of food: dry and wet. The most practical food is dry pellets. Many brands sell 5kg bags, making it easy to carry one (don’t forget the measuring cup) and keep it with you for long periods of time. If you are going on a short trip, you can pre-portion the food into reusable silicone bags.

When it comes to wet food, it should be very easy to buy the boxes or packages you need. However, be careful with the heat advice. For example, if your puppy needs to be kept on wet food (or dry food) at or below a certain temperature, you may need to make this adjustment. Pack a small cooler just for your dog’s food.
If you forget your dog’s food, run out, or think you can buy it when you get to your destination but can’t find it, buy food with a similar ingredient list and arm yourself with a secret ingredient: organic, canned pumpkin.
“The fiber in pumpkin makes this new food easier to digest,” says Jonas Devereux, clinical nutritionist and director of nutrition and health at Bow Wow Labs.
Don’t forget dog treats. You should include it in your food pantry. Also consider packing something extra to reward you for being a good boy or girl throughout the trip.

Don’t forget to pack your puppy vitamins and supplements. It is important to follow the dog’s regular feeding program – the path is no different. If your dog tends to get upset stomachs while traveling, consider ginger root as a remedy. “Ginger root helps to calm and soothe the stomach and is best given before a bowel movement,” suggests Devereux.
TPG Tip: Keep dog food and treats out of reach of your puppy in your vehicle so they are not tempted by familiar smells.
Just as you stock up on protein bars and emergency food mix, you should do the same for your loyal companion. There are many unknowns associated with the open road. You may be delayed by weather or car problems, and in that case you’ll need to pack extra dog food. (I like to pack at least two more days of food.)
Stopping for exotic foods and delicacies is obviously one of the best parts of the trip. There should be no exception to the rule when your puppy follows you. Once you’ve planned your route and itinerary, do your due diligence to find some spot stops. (While the occasional Starbucks can be fun, it’s best not to make it a daily treat.)
