Living in Phoenix and having family in Southern California means we get to travel around the area a lot. We have family in several cities in Southern California and visit as often as possible. We love taking dogs with us and even when we have family, sometimes we need more space than they can provide or the house may not work best when we have dogs with us. For long periods together. Finding housing for dogs can be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are our top tips for traveling to California with the whole family (including your dog), including where to stay, what to pack and what to do.
Bringing a dog usually means that we can plan a longer vacation because we don’t have to worry about finding a sitter at home. My mom lives in San Clemente so we are always looking for rentals in and around the area. There are so many options and I love that they have a 24/7 customer service team with staff on hand if you need them. You can choose the house according to the needs of your family (and dog) according to your travel plans. For example, love the roof space in this house.

Chance and Kona are always up for a trip to the dog beach. There are many nice walks where you can take your dog on a lead, but only a few are dog-friendly beaches. We love going to any beach or shop in town. There are many nice shops on San Clemente Avenida Del Mar and if you keep walking you will run to the beach.
But the dog beach is another experience. We always visit one when we are in town with the dog. The two we visit most often are Rosie’s dog beach in Long Beach or Huntington Dog Beach. A little further south, Del Mar Beach is where the dogs can play.

If not, I recommend bringing a long leash so your dog can play as long as you know they won’t try to swim to Catalina Island! Don’t forget to bring fresh water and extra towels to your car to clean up as much sand as possible after playing!

We were on a mission to find the best dog beaches in Southern California, and to our surprise, our options were limited. There are many off-leash beaches, but we have dogs that enjoy walking freely in and out of the water, so an off-leash beach is a must.
Over the past few months, we’ve discovered all of Southern California’s deserted dog beaches and ranked them from our favorite to our least favorite.
Huntington Dog Beach was definitely our favorite dog beach in Southern California and we would go here every weekend if we lived nearby. The dog beach area is clearly marked and we had no trouble finding a parking spot as we arrived just before noon.
Its length, clarity and shallow water created the best environment for our children. It was Zooey’s first time wading in the water alone, and she was very happy running in and out of the water.

A wonderful non-profit group runs this beach and does a great job of maintaining a “safe” environment so our children can run and play.
We were staying at the Hilton Beachfront Hotel in Santa Barbara and a friend highly recommended we go to Hendry Beach. Crystal really liked the atmosphere here.
The incredible waterfalls were spectacular and there was plenty of room for everyone on the beach. The uncharted territory begins in the east and is clearly marked to guide you in the right direction.
We found a restaurant here that overlooks the beautiful Arroyo Burro beach. However, they do not allow dogs. Fear not, because there are plenty of other dog-friendly options around Santa Barbara.
Best Dog Friendly Lakes In California
Ocean Avenue and Scenic Road, Carmel, CA 93922 Parking: Yes, but very limited Street Parking: Yes, but very limited Bathrooms: Yes.
This was the first beach we visited and the furthest from LAX. For some reason, this dog beach is always listed as a Southern California spot. However, Carmel is actually part of Northern California and is closer to San Francisco than Los Angeles.
We decided to go ahead and put it on our list because Carmel-by-the-Sea is dog-friendly and ranked the #1 dog-friendly city in America.
We were staying at a nearby hotel with the dogs so we decided to walk to Carmel Beach because parking is very limited. The scenery here is beautiful and the powdery white sand felt great on our feet.
Best Glamping Near Me
Kuma loved the sand here and was so happy when his little feet touched it. We think the white sand reminded him of Florida.
This was the busiest dog beach we visited. We arrived at 9am and were surprised to see the parking lot lined up outside the stadium.
Luckily we got to one spot and the key was to be patient as someone always gets back in the car and leaves.
There are a ton of people from tourists, beach volleyball players, dog walkers to beach goers, so with a large parking lot it was packed.
