Vacation Dog Leash Gif – I’ve been getting a lot of questions about my CrossFit startup lately. How I started, my pre-health exam, how often I go, my before and after photos, etc. So this post is going to be about how I started CrossFit and why I stick with it.
I have known the general concept of CrossFit for some time. I have a few friends from college who do it religiously. But I only tried it at the beginning of this year because I was lazy, really into yoga, I was afraid of “looking stupid” in front of a bunch of people. Around last year’s holiday season, I can name five more moves from my beauty class, gym, and makeup routine without breaking a sweat (that’s when you know it’s time for a change). It’s not a challenge anymore and I’m tired. I want to get stronger and gain weight (break 100 kg!!) but not fat.

I don’t have a happy story about how I lost XX pounds through CrossFit. Very different actually. My story is that I gained almost 15 pounds through CrossFit and went from skinny fat to very skinny. . I have always been beautiful and have always been considered thin. During my final year at university I was diagnosed with an eating disorder which caused me to lose weight (not a blessing of course). No matter how much I ate, I fell fast. And I was sick all the time and I was sick for a long time. I know the wonders of daily exercise and health. My father was a hard worker and never got sick even though he was surrounded by sick people and had excellent health. So with the new year around the corner, I decided to give CrossFit a try in order to get stronger and healthier. I took my first CrossFit class at Fitness Gone Bad in Hawaii at 88 pounds.

Not really. I started CrossFit about 8 months after graduation. I work at CMU on some sleep. I ate like crazy: ramen, dino nuggets, free food and lots of ice cream and didn’t exercise unless I counted going to class. However, in high school I was a happy leader and often went on field trips with my dad and Daisy. In September 2010, I started practicing yogalates (yoga + pilates) with a greater Ashtanga influence, as well as fitness classes at your GloboGym. It was really hard the first few months and I got used to it.
After my first gym class at Fitness Gone Bad, I was sold on CrossFit and wanted to move to the Bay Area. I did the wrong thing with CrossFit gyms nearby and decided to join Jason Calipa’s box: CrossFit Santa Clara/Mountain View, mainly because of the two gyms (Santa Clara close to work, Mountain View close to home) and Jason’s name. When I first got into Jason’s box I couldn’t get the pull up (the one with the big green) and I hit 33# hard. However, I can do pushups, jumps, and high reps from heel to bar and knee to knee. All my moves are really “slow and graceful”. I have a hard time with lifting, especially popping my hips and walking fast. I still do today, but it’s almost as bad. Jason always yells at me for being too smart and thinking too much. At first I was very nervous about the community and working with many athletes. After my first class at CrossFit Santa Clara (10/1/2011), it quickly disappeared when I realized that everyone was there to inspire and help each other. Now the community is one of my favorite parts of CrossFit!
I started by going 2-3 times a week while still going hard 4-5 times a week to yoga and sometimes a fitness class. I was skeptical at first. I’m afraid of getting “big” or super muscular by lifting weights. I voiced my concerns and did my research. Ladies, we can’t get HUGE (side note: check out this great post on Women in Muscle). Anyway, back to the music, soon I was coming every week and CrossFit quickly jumped to 5 times a week since the beginning of February. At that time, I stopped going to the gym, but continued to practice yoga. I practiced yoga regularly until May, when my attendance quickly dropped to zero. I haven’t done yoga in almost 3 months, I’m going to try to get back into it as I think it really helps with recovery and some gymnastic moves. Now I do CrossFit six times a week, Monday through Saturday. Good thing CrossFit Mountain View is closed on Sundays or I wouldn’t have a day off!

That’s how I started and will continue! I completed a move I thought I could never do. I recovered well and cut my anxiety disorder recovery time in half. I haven’t been sick since I started CrossFit. I am now in the best shape and healthiest of my life. And the best part is that I enjoy it so much!
