Best Dog Friendly Accommodation Jindabyne

Best Dog Friendly Accommodation Jindabyne – Unfortunately, the snowy mountains of the New South Wales highlands are not the most dog-friendly places. Although Kosciuszko National Park has most of the ski resorts and tourist attractions, only a few are dog-friendly.

However, it is still possible to stay in Jindabyne or nearby national parks with your dog and enjoy the surrounding pleasures of this alpine region. Here are my tips for visiting Jindabyne with your dog…

So, since dogs are not allowed to walk or ski in Kosciuszko National Park, what is there to do with dogs in Jindabyne and the snowy mountains?

The most reliable snow occurs in the Snowy Mountains at the altitude of the ski areas of Thredbo, Perisher, Charlotte Pass and Selwyn, especially in years with little natural snow and when ski area operators depend on the snow supply to operate. While none of these ski resorts are dog-friendly, these aren’t the only places in the snowy mountains where you can see snow.

During the colder months when snow falls at lower altitudes, you may see snow in nearby Jindabyne – maybe once or twice a year. While there may not seem to be enough snow for skiing or snowboarding, sometimes there is enough to have fun playing in the snow with your kids!

The most popular hiking takes place in the snowy mountains of Kosciuszko National Park, especially along the many trails that lead to Mount Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest peak. However, there are still good walks around Jindabyne.

It’s an easy walk along a paved path and cycle path that starts at Banjo Patterson Park in the center of Jindabyne and continues 3.5km to Discovery Parks – Jindabyne Caravan Park (where dogs are no longer allowed), near the Thredbo turnoff.

While overlooking the shores of Jindabyne Lake, the trail also passes through Jindabyne’s off-leash dog training area, the Claypits Recreation Area. Take about an hour for the walk each way if you complete the entire tour, and keep your dog on a leash outside the off-leash area.

Lake Jindabyne was formed in the 1960s as part of the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Project and is now well known as a trout fishing destination. One of the largest freshwater reservoirs in all of New South Wales, the lake is home to populations of brook and rainbow trout, as well as Atlantic salmon.

Fishing is especially popular during the summer. You can also fish from the shore, but it is better if you go out on the lake by boat. If you do not have your own boat and equipment, you can rent boats and fishing equipment from several centers in Jindabyne. And of course, your dog can join you, perhaps wearing his own life jacket.

Lake Jindabyne is not the only lake in the area with good fishing. Lake Eucumbene is also a popular fishing spot.

There are several breweries and even a few pubs around Jindabyne, so there’s no excuse not to try a local beer while you’re in the snowy mountains with your pup by your side.

Jindabyne Brewing is located on the west side of the city and is open from Wednesday to Sunday. Dogs are allowed on leashes, and there’s a small menu, from grasshoppers to schnitzels (including vegetarian options).

Kosciusko Brewery is located inside the beautiful Banjo Patterson Inn, directly across from the lakefront. While dogs are obviously not allowed in the brewery area, their famous Kosciuszko Pale Ale is served in various bars of the establishment, and dogs are allowed at the outdoor tables.

Alternatively, head out of town to Snowy Vineyard and Microbrewery, home of Dalgety Brewing Company. It’s a 40-minute drive from Jindabyne, but reviewers agree it’s worth the trip, especially for the ginger ale.

From Jindabyne it is a 110km drive to Khancoban, near the Victorian border, along the Alpine Road. I think the most beautiful part of the trip is the first half as you drive through Thredbo, where there is still snow on the heights in November, and then out to the Great Divide, full of fog.

The whole journey to Khanchoban takes almost 2 hours, where you can stop for rest or lunch. There aren’t many options in Khankoban, so maybe take a picnic.

After visiting Khancoban you can return to Jindabyne along the same route or take the longer route back through Kindra. (On our last trip we continued to Victoria.) I haven’t been on the road to Kindra recently, through the old town of Cabramurra, but if memory serves, it was pretty amazing.

The journey from Khankoban to Kindra, near the junction of the Snowy Mountains highway, takes about 80 minutes. Then another 90 minutes to Jindabyne. The total travel time is about 4 hours and 40 minutes.

Please note that some of these roads are closed during the winter and other roads may require snow chains. It is best to ride it in summer.

There are two dog exercise areas in Jindabyne that are ideal for letting your pup work off some energy or just for a leisurely stroll.

The first zone is located at the Claypits resort, on the western edge of the city, in the same location as the golf course. There are several signs along the edge of the off-leash area: Outside dogs must be on a leash.

There is also a second outdoor dog walking area on the shores of Pooh Bay. It is located on the south side of Cobbon Crescent, on the east side of the city. A map of both areas can be found on the Council’s website.
